Volkswagen CEO: The ninth-generation Golf will be an electric car, part of the ID series

In October 2019, the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf was officially released in Wolfsburg, Germany. At this time, 45 years have passed since the birth of the first generation of Golf.

Now, Thomas Schafer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, said that the company will not cancel the Golf name, but instead the model will appear as part of the EV ID series, with the existing eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf to be retired around 2027 to 2028.

That ID naming convention will continue, he said, because it is already known to buyers and is associated with the electric Volkswagen.

“There is a connection between Volkswagen and ID and there is no need to do away with it,” he told Autocar at the Los Angeles Auto Show, “We have iconic brands, the Golf and GTI, and it would be crazy to let them die out. We will stick with the ID logic, but the iconic models will carry the same names as before.”

Buzz already has such a name, and the ID family of models doesn’t really need to have a number after it (e.g. ID 3, ID 4, etc.). For this reason, Volkswagen “may have the ID Golf. He added: “We’re not giving up the Golf name, never.”

Schafer made it clear that the Golf will not replace the Volkswagen ID.3 and that the two cars can be seen as different models in terms of size and positioning. When asked if there was room for both, he replied “yes”. According to the report, “The ID.3 was never a successor to the Golf, it was more of a Golf upgrade.”
