Vehicles equipped with L2 assisted driving are not allowed near the observatory, The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology explains why

“equipped with millimeter wave radar has L2 level assisted driving vehicles, shall not be close to the observatory”, I believe that many car owners are not aware of such a cold knowledge. In fact, this provision is formulated and issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the specific details in the “Interim Provisions for the Management of Automobile Radar Radio” has been clarified.

It is reported that China plans a 76-79GHz band for automotive radar, which refers to a kind of millimeter wave radar installed in cars, the main use scenarios include adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance, blind spot detection, lane change assistance, parking assistance, rear vehicle warning, pedestrian detection, etc. It has the advantage of stable detection of targets in bad weather conditions such as rain and snow.

But the car’s millimeter wave radar will cause interference with the observatory’s radio telescope observations, in order to protect the radio astronomy business working in the same frequency band, the Ministry of Industry regulations loaded car radar vehicles shall not drive into China’s relevant radio astronomical observatory interference protection distance.

And in the specification document, there is a ban on vehicles with car millimeter-wave radar to make planning for the area, the radio astronomical observatory in Qinghai Xiaomatan, Shanghai Songjiang District and the radio astronomical observatory in Beijing Miyun District, Beijing, Xinjiang Gangu Township

Radio Astronomical Observatory, Shihezi Village Radio Astronomical Observatory, and Dujuan Lake Radio Astronomical Observatory in Pu’er, Yunnan, all have interference protection zones of different distances.
