Foreign media thegamer this Saturday interviewed Ubisoft developer, “Prince of Persia” series of games founder Jordan Mechner.
The developer touched on the current state of the Prince of Persia series, a classic game that is returning with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown after a 14-year hiatus. However, the game isn’t a brand new 3A title as fans were expecting.
Jordan Mechner pointed out that 2D was the right choice for the return of the Prince of Persia series, which couldn’t co-exist with the Assassin’s Creed series, which had taken over the Prince of Persia franchise. “You look at Assassin’s Creed: Visions and you can see that there is no way that this style of 3A game could exist in the Prince of Persia series.”
Furthermore, he believes that the Assassin’s Creed series has taken the place of the Prince of Persia series in the gaming industry, and fans should note that the former was initially positioned as a spin-off of the latter.
However, that doesn’t mean that the Ubisoft team hasn’t made a 3A version of a Prince of Persia game. It has been revealed that footage of a game titled Prince of Persia: Redemption was leaked a few years ago, but ultimately had to be canceled because the development didn’t work out.
Ubisoft’s horizontal action game “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown” will be released on January 18, 2024 for PS5 / PS4 / XSX|S / X1 / Switch / PC platforms. In this quirky and thrilling action-adventure platformer, players will take on the role of Sargon (who is not the Prince of Persia, but rather the Prince of Persia’s guard) as he steps into the fantastical world of Persia and single-handedly manipulates the boundaries of time and space. As Sargon, master the art of combat, unlock new powers of time and unique skills, and grow from blade-wielding wizard to legend.
