U.S. startup launches Anode-Free Cell: cost cut in half, range of nearly 1,000 km

U.S. battery startup Our Next Energy (ONE) said Tuesday it has launched a new anode-free battery pack that aims to reduce battery costs by up to 50 percent while providing up to 600 miles (about 965 kilometers) of driving range. The company’s founder and CEO, Mujeeb Ijaz, said in an interview that they hope to start producing its Gemini battery pack at a new 20-gigawatt-hour plant in the United States in 2026.

Other battery companies are developing anode-free batteries, but ONE’s Gemini appears to be unique in that it uses two different battery chemicals, one for daily driving and the other for extended range on long trips.

By removing the anodes from these batteries, ONE says it can reduce the cost of mass production of the batteries by $50/kWh, which is half the current estimated cost of $100-110/kWh.

Ijaz said, “Our goal is to introduce Gemini batteries with zero cobalt and 26 percent nickel or less in 2026, using manganese as the primary cathode material.”

The company’s Gemini battery will be on display at the Battery Show in Novi, Michigan, Sept. 13-15.
