U.S. Auto Theft Report: Tesla Model 3 All-Wheel Drive Version Least Stolen

The U.S. Highway Loss Data Institute (HDLI) released the 2022 auto theft rate report, revealing an interesting fact: in the United States, the Tesla Model 3 AWD is the least stolen car.

HDLI’s report lists each model’s Relative Claim Frequency (RCF) score, which is based on the ratio of the number of insured vehicles to the number of theft claims for each model. According to HDLI, the Tesla Model 3 AWD is the model with the lowest RCF score.

HDLI’s report includes a table showing that the Tesla Model 3 AWD has an RCF score of 3 with only 3 claims. It is followed closely by the Tesla Model Y AWD with an RCF score of 3 and 5 claims. Other Tesla models also topped the list, such as the Tesla Model X AWD (RCF score of 8 with 2 claims), the Tesla Model 3 RWD (RCF score of 9 with 6 claims) and the Tesla Model S AWD (RCF score of 15 with 4 claims).

Conversely, the most stolen model is the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat with an RCF score of 6,128 and 196 claims. Next is the Dodge Charger HEMI with an RCF score of 2,197 and 712 claims. The Honda CR-V 4WD has an RCF score of 409 and a whopping 1,141 claims.

There could be multiple reasons for the low RCF score of Tesla electric cars, and Tesla electric cars are inherently difficult to steal. Every Tesla is capable of connecting to the internet, so it’s easy to track these vehicles, and its security features such as PIN to Drive also make it difficult for someone without owner credentials to drive a Tesla.

When a Canadian rental company’s Tesla Model S was rented by a customer and shipped abroad, the car was successfully recovered by Interpol in cooperation with Italian police during transit in Italy. Throughout the process, the Model S’s owner was able to track the car’s location, even though it was at sea.
