TSMC said today that it has not yet finalized plans for the second phase of its Arizona fab, according to Taiwan’s Economic Daily News. “In view of the strong customer demand for the company’s advanced processes, we will evaluate future plans with respect to operational efficiency and cost-economy factors.”

TSMC said the Arizona fab, currently under construction, contains a portion of the building that may be used for the second phase of the facility to improve cost efficiency by utilizing resources from the simultaneous construction of the first phase. This building will allow the company to maintain flexibility for future expansion.

In May 2020, TSMC announced that it will invest $12 billion in a new fab in Arizona, USA. Construction of the facility began in June 2021 and is expected to be operational in 2024.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier today that TSMC plans to announce in the coming months that it will build a cutting-edge semiconductor plant in northern Phoenix, Arizona, adjacent to another chip plant the company will announce in 2020, according to people familiar with the matter.
