In a recent study published by the research institute, Toyota was listed as one of the “global companies most hindering climate policy in 2022”.
Greenpeace found that of the top 10 automakers, Toyota ranks last in decarbonization efforts, has less than 1% of total sales of zero-emission vehicles (non-hybrid), and has the least developed supply chain for reducing carbon emissions.
Toyota has been offering hybrids for more than two decades, providing a means of transitioning to zero-emission, all-electric. Still, Toyota has been sticking to its hybrid strategy, offering hybrid, fuel cell and gas-powered vehicles without a full transition to zero-emission vehicles.
As you can see from the list released by climate think tank InfluenceMap, Toyota is on the list along with a number of oil/gas companies.
Ed Collins, Director of InfluenceMap, said: “Many of the companies on the list have made the highest commitments to combat climate change, but in fact continue to implement specific policies against that goal.
Meanwhile, the study noted that Toyota has “improved its climate policy engagement” but is still leading “a global automotive lobbying effort against policies to phase out internal combustion engine-powered vehicles.”
