Tokyo Electron develops equipment to produce 400-layer 3D NAND flash memory

In order to catch up with Lam Research, Tokyo Electron successfully developed equipment that can produce 400-layer 3D NAND flash memory. It is estimated that this technology can benefit the company. Generating billions of dollars in net revenue.

Producing 3D NAND requires specialized equipment and is currently mainly controlled by US company Lam Group. In June this year that Tokyo Electronics has developed a new etching technology, bringing electroetching applications into the low-temperature range for the first time, and creatively invented a system with extremely high etching rates.

Tokyo Weinig hopes to challenge Lam Group with this technology. Compared with existing methods, the new etching method increases productivity by at least 2.5 times.

Tokyo Weili Technology said that this technology has very little harmful impact on the environment. The company estimates that after customers complete installation and debugging, they can start producing 400-layer 3D NAND memories in the next 2-3 years; it is estimated that by 2027, the production capacity in this field will be quadrupled this year to $2 billion.

Tokyo Electron sold no more than $3.9 billion worth of etching equipment last fiscal year, about a quarter of its total sales. With the help of new technology, the company expects to at least double its core sales.

In the etching system market for the semiconductor industry, which had sales of US$20 billion last year, Tokyo Electronics ranked second with a 25% share, while the US company Lam Research continued to lead, accounting for half of the market.

Over the past five years, Tokyo Electronics’ R&D expenditures have increased by 77%, and this year’s R&D expenditures are expected to reach a record high of US$1.34 billion.
