Tianma launches next-generation CFOT technology, says it will bring ultra-thin folding screens

According to the Tianma Microelectronics public news, Tianma launched a new generation of CFOT technology applied to OLED screens, to meet the needs of mobile phones’ long battery life, screen bending, screen colour reality and so on.

Tianma’s CFOT technology is called Color Filter On Touch, which simply means that the R&D team has developed CFOT technology to replace the polarizer in the OLED screen structure.

In OLED screen construction, the polariser is an opaque plastic sheet that prevents light from entering the screen from outside and interfering with the display. Without the anti-reflective effect of the polariser, an OLED screen would reflect like a mirror. On the other hand, when the OLED screen self-illuminates through the polariser, the brightness of the light drops by more than 50%, resulting in high power consumption. By replacing the polariser with the CFOT technology developed by Tianma, the light transmission rate is officially increased by more than 30% and the power consumption of the panel is reduced by more than 25% (measured values).

Officially, with the breakthroughs in innovative technologies such as HTD and MLP, Tianma claims that with the integration of HTD+MLP+CFOT, the power consumption of the entire panel based on relevant application scenarios can be significantly reduced by over 30%. Consumers can enjoy the smooth experience of a 1Hz-120Hz intelligent dynamic refresh rate screen while relieving the worry of low power consumption.

In addition, another innovative advantage of Tianma’s CFOT technology is that it significantly improves the folding and curling performance of flexible screens. Commonly available flexible folding screens often suffer from peeling of the adhesive material underneath the polariser when repeatedly bent. By replacing the polariser with CFOT technology, the problem of adhesive peeling failure can be solved, while reducing one layer of plastic and one layer of adhesive, reducing the size of the screen stack, achieving the ultimate bending radius and passing the bending test over 200,000 times.

At SID2022, Tianma showcased its ultra-thin stacked screen with CFOT technology, which enables ultra-thin curling through the material and adhesive design adjustments, as well as curling more than 100,000 times.

In addition, Tianma’s CFOT technology has been studied to improve light transmission while further enhancing the colour gamut of the screen, allowing for the experience of super retina-quality natural colours. Officially, screens with CFOT technology have a 15% higher NTSC colour gamut than screens with polariser solutions, which is an industry-leading level. The colour display is more realistic and natural, with better colour purity and colour expression than traditional OLED screens.

Tianma’s new generation CFOT technology can be widely applied to foldable mobile phones, cars, notebooks and future curly flexible display products.
