The world’s first solar-powered electric car, the Sono Sion, travels about 112 kilometers per week

In 2017, Munich, Germany startup Sono Motors launched the world’s first solar-powered electric car, Sono Sion. recently, the company announced that the Sion solar-powered electric car will start production in the second half of 2023, by the Finnish company Valmet Automotive will be responsible for production and manufacturing.

As motor1 reported yesterday, as of Sept. 1 of this year, more than 20,000 units had been pre-ordered, with an average pre-order price of 2,000 euros. the official Sono Motors website shows that the Sion solar electric car currently has a deposit of 500 euros and an MSRP of 29,900 euros. Sono plans to produce about 257,000 Sion cars in seven years after it completes its capacity ramp.

According to the report, the Sion solar electric car is equipped with solar panels on almost every plane, including the hood, roof, fenders and trunk. Sono officials say the car has a total of 456 solar cells, providing a range of about 112 kilometers per week, but that number could double if the weather is better.

In addition to the solar panels, the Sion solar electric car also has a 54 kWh battery pack with a WLTP range of 305 kilometers. The battery has a charging power limit of 75 kW and a bi-directional charging function that turns the car into a mobile power station with an output of 2.7 kW. Powering the Sion solar electric vehicle is a 120 kW electric motor with a maximum torque of 270 N・m.
