Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) — Back in 2017, Munich, Germany-based startup Sono Motors launched the world’s first solar-powered electric vehicle, the SonoSion.
Recently, the company announced that the Sion solar-powered electric vehicle will start production in the second half of 2023, and will be manufactured by Finland’s Valmet Automotive.
Reports say that as of September 1 this year, the car has been booked for more than 20,000 units, and the SonoMotors website shows that the Sion solar electric car currently has a deposit of 500 euros and an MSRP of 29,900 euros. After the completion of the capacity climb, Sono’s plan to produce about 257,000 Sion cars in seven years.
According to the introduction, Sion solar electric car in almost every plane is equipped with solar panels, including the hood, roof, fenders and trunk. However, considering the cost of the vehicle after an accident, the front of the car is not equipped with solar panels.
Sono officials say the vehicle has a total of 456 solar cells, providing a range of about 112 kilometers per week, but that number could double if the weather is better.
In addition, the vehicle also has a 54kWh battery pack with a WLTP range of 305km, a battery with a charging power cap of 75kW and a bi-directional charging function that turns the car into a mobile power station with an output of 2.7kW. Powering the Sion solar electric car is a 120kW motor with a maximum torque of 270N-m.
