8BitDo hopes to enter the high-end controller market with the latest Ultimate Controller. The controller is currently available for pre-order on the Amazon platform and will start shipping on October 28.
8BitDo’s older controllers (such as the SN30 Pro and Pro 2) have a wide range of compatibility options thanks to Bluetooth connectivity, but the Ultimate Controller will be available in three different configurations – Bluetooth ($69.99), 2.4Ghz ($49.99) or Wired ($34.99), allowing users to choose based on gaming platform and connectivity.
The Bluetooth model will also come with a 2.4Ghz wireless adapter and is compatible with Nintendo Switch, Windows, Android and iOS devices along with the wired model. 2.4Ghz models are not compatible with the Switch but retain all other connectivity options previously available.
Previous 8BitDo handles were based on classic Sega and Nintendo designs, but the Ultimate Controller is more akin to the modern model you’d associate with PlayStation or Xbox, with an asymmetrical analog joystick and a pair of backplates for additional inputs. However, the Ultimate Controller will offer a set of advanced features that are typically twice the price of the Ultimate Controller.
In addition to being available in black, white and pink colorways, the Ultimate Controller’s wireless model comes with its own charging cradle. However, perhaps the coolest new feature coming with the new Ultimate Controller is 8BitDo’s new grip software suite, which allows you to remap and tweak the controls on your PC, Android and iOS devices. You’ll be able to save your preferences to up to three separate profiles that are stored independently on the grip’s hardware.
