The Edge team explains how to improve the overall performance experience with disk cache compression technology

0

In an article published Wednesday, the Microsoft Edge team detailed how disk cache compression technology can improve the overall performance experience of the browser. It is reported that Microsoft added this feature in the previously released Edge 102 version – designed to help Microsoft Edge maintain a better balance between performance and resource overhead, especially on those devices with less storage space.

Like other modern browsers, Microsoft Edge caches content on disk so that the next time you access something, you can pull the content you need directly from a local copy (rather than over a remote network).

In this way, Edge can work faster and more efficiently. On the other hand, Microsoft can’t relax the cache size indefinitely to avoid depleting the resources available on the computer. And this is where compression can come into play.

Microsoft says Edge will target “highly compressible” content to maximize caching and reduce network calls. In Edge version 102, the browser has been able to automatically compress the disk cache on devices that “qualify for checks.

The Microsoft Edge team shared details about these checks, but also clarified that compression will only be performed if it does not degrade overall performance and user experience.

Among the Edge feature changes for consumers, Microsoft also recently announced the Command Palette to allow users to quickly access features and actions.

In addition Microsoft has been made aware that some users are experiencing issues with favorites synchronization and plans to fix them in an upcoming release.
