Tesla’s German super factory has doubled production of the Model Y since this summer. This summer, production of the electric SUV was reportedly at 1,000 units per week. After a steady increase, it is now exceeding 2,000 units per week. However, this is still far short of Tesla’s target, as the current production level is only around one-fifth of Tesla’s planned full capacity utilization.
Tesla plans to produce 500,000 electric cars per year when production is fully ramped up at its German plants.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at the company’s third-quarter earnings presentation, “The Berlin plant has reached another milestone in the ramp-up process, producing 2,000 very good quality cars in one week, and production is increasing rapidly.”
Tesla’s German plant officially opened in March. Thanks to the plant, Tesla overtook VW in the number of electric cars registered in Germany in the first three quarters of this year and is a full 6,000 ahead. Tesla had originally planned to build another battery plant near the Berlin factory, however, due to the introduction of new electric vehicles and battery regulations in the US, Tesla’s priority is now to produce batteries in Austin, Texas, USA.
