Tesla to take 30,000 owners “to the sky” to ride on South Korea’s “hitchhiker”

Back in 2018, Tesla had a referral program to help sell vehicles, where owners could share referral codes with new buyers who earned Supercharging credits. In exchange, referrals would be rewarded based on the number of referrals they earned, with one of the prizes being a photo launched into deep space.

The reward says: “Launch your photo into deep space orbit and we’ll laser etch it into glass and send it into deep space orbit for millions of years while waiting for an alien race to discover your photo.”

July 31 – Tesla is working with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute of Korea to launch photos of Tesla customers into space on SpaceX’s Lunar Orbiter mission.

Tesla confirmed that the photos will be launched next week in conjunction with SpaceX’s launch of the Korean Pathfinder lunar orbiter mission. In other words, Tesla intends to hitch a ride on the Korean mission.

In the ninth phase of the referral program (which ends on February 2, 2019), about 30,000 users worldwide were rewarded for “launching their photos into space,” including about 2,000 Tesla users in China.

The photos uploaded by users will be laser engraved on aluminum plates and launched into space with the rocket, while digital versions of the photos will also be available on the website for users to download and save themselves.

But do the owners really think there is no problem to launch their photos into the sky?
