Tesla solar roof blocked, most areas have suspended installation

Tesla has suspended new solar roof installation arrangements in most U.S. markets, according to electrek. It’s unclear what’s happening, but deployment of the solar product has been slow, falling far behind Elon Musk’s goals.

At the time of its launch, Tesla CEO Elon Musk saw the solar roof as a key product to accelerate solar deployment, opening up the market for people who will need a new roof in the future while offering a compelling new product.

Musk’s goal is for Tesla to produce 1,000 new solar roofs per week by the end of 2019. And earlier this month, electrek obtained data on solar roofs for the first time and confirmed that Tesla deployed 2.5 megawatts of solar roofs in the second quarter of 2022, or about 23 per week, well behind its goal.

Now, electrek has learned from sources familiar with the matter that Tesla has suspended plans to install solar roofs in nearly all of its markets in the United States, the only country where Tesla has installed solar roofs.

It’s unclear why Tesla is suspending installations, possibly due to a lack of supply of solar shingles. Tesla suspended the installation of solar roofs in March due to supply problems.

The solar roof has been released in its third iteration, and Tesla has improved the cost and speed of installation, but it is still a more expensive product.
