Tesla recalls 40,000 vehicles in U.S., will fix electronic assisted steering issue through OTA

Tesla has filed a recall of 40,000 vehicles with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, mainly involving problems with the electronic assisted steering EPAS on some 2017 to 2021 Tesla Model S and Model X models, which Tesla says will be addressed through an OTA update.

According to documents published by NHTSA, the power steering assist system may lose its effectiveness when you drive one of these models on rough roads or after hitting a pothole. Tesla has identified 314 alerts about the issue for U.S. vehicles that could be linked to the recall.

Tesla says more than 97 percent of recalled vehicles have now completed the latest firmware update. “If you have already installed firmware version 2022.36.5 or later that means no further action is required.”

Due to the advent of new energy smart connected vehicles, most models can be updated by OTA to resolve issues encountered with the vehicle, however, NHTSA requires Tesla to issue a “recall” when using an OTA software update to resolve an issue that should have been resolved through a recall, so the term “recall The term “recall” may be somewhat misleading to users.

This September, Tesla CEO Elon Musk even pointed this out, calling the term “outdated and inaccurate. Of course, we at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology use the term “recall” as well.
