Tesla is recalling certain Model S, Model X, and Model Y models, according to a recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The pitch angles of the front-facing cameras on these affected models may not be aligned according to specifications, which could prevent active safety features from being enabled, it said.
To put it simply, Tesla adopts a pure vision solution. If the camera is not aligned according to the standard, it will affect the assisted driving functions such as automatic braking, collision warning and lane keeping, but the driver cannot detect whether these functions related to safety are available, because the car will not issue any warning. As a result, this can lead to car owners over-reliance on unavailable features, thereby increasing the risk of car accidents.
According to the NHTSA report, a total of 1,337 vehicles may be affected, 80 percent of which may be defective. At present, domestic models should not be affected by this problem.
The recall includes Tesla Model S produced between January 24, 2023 and July 10, 2023, Model X produced between January 17 and July 20, 2023, and Model Y produced between April 27 and July 13, 2023.
Tesla is said to have identified 83 warranty claims and 2 field reports that may be related to the problem described in this recall, but has not seen any accidents, injuries or deaths that may be related to this problem.
To fix the issue, Tesla will inspect the front-facing cameras in affected vehicles at no charge and adjust them to the standard range if necessary.
According to a recent research report released by iSeeCars, Tesla was identified as the most frequently recalled car brand in the United States, with Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y occupying four of the top five recalled models.
