Tesla, which tripled the capacity of its 4680 batteries in the third quarter of last year, is preparing to increase production of this type of battery in California, and they have leased a factory for it, according to a foreign media report.
The foreign media is citing two sources to report that Tesla has leased a factory in California, the sources clearly said that the factory Tesla leased, will be used for the production of 4680 batteries.
From what the sources revealed, Tesla’s newly leased facility, which is over 210,000 square feet, or about 20,000 square meters, comes from an industrial real estate investor, and the facility in question was initially planned to be a manufacturing center for Applied Materials, but they have canceled the lease.
Tesla’s new leased facility is just 3 miles from their Fremont, California facility and closer to their Kato Road facility, which is now considered the primary production facility for the 4680 battery, according to the press release.
The 4680 battery was introduced by Tesla at the 2020 Battery Day event and is larger, has higher energy density, higher output and costs less than the previous 2170 battery.
While suppliers such as Panasonic and LG New Energy are also conducting related research and development after Tesla launched the 4680 battery, Tesla itself is also producing it. Foreign media mentioned in the report, in last year’s three-quarter earnings analyst conference call, Tesla’s CFO revealed that at the end of the fourth quarter, the 4680 battery capacity will exceed the production needs of 1,000 cars. i
