The Tesla Model Y became available for pre-order in Japan in the month of June, but no delivery has come through ever since. This delay in delivery is due to the COVID-19 restrictions that put the Giga factory in China out of production for a while. Two shipments of the Model Y SUV hit Japan shores, hence facilitating the vehicle’s first delivery on September 9.

In honour of its first delivery, the Tesla Japan branch held a gala event in the country. Currently, Tesla’s Japanese branch is retailing two model configurations of the Model Y. The two models available in Japan are the electric SUVs RWD and performance options.

The retail price for the Tesla Model Y in Japan is 6,190,000 Yen (~$46,156) for the RWD models. Its performance model retails for 8,090,000 Yen (~$60,324) and is available for sale in Japan now. Customers who pre-ordered this vehicle will get delivery in the coming weeks.

The EV maker is hoping for impressive sales of the Model Y as its Model 3 did not do so well in Japan. As the region opens up to electrification, Tesla along with other EV manufacturers has a fair chance of growth. The performance of the Tesla Model Y and other EVs from BYD currently available in Japan will tell if other manufacturers will leap into the country’s EV market.
