Tesla Model Y HW4.0 hardware dismantling, only some details are different from Model X / S

Tesla has begun delivering some Model Y models produced at its Fremont, California factory, which are equipped with Hardware 4 (HW4), the latest version of its self-driving computer system.

Next, Tesla’s new models will be upgraded with a new generation of HW 4.0, but we have not seen any details about the HW 4.0 hardware on the Model Y.

Now that @greentheonly has disassembled an anonymous donor’s Model Y, we can take a look at what the new car’s HW4.0 system looks like.

From the appearance, the HW 4.0 hardware of Model Y is similar to that of Model X / S models, and the circuit board layout is also very similar, but some details are different, such as the overall shape is closer to a square, which is why HW3.0 cannot be transformed to HW One of the reasons for 4.0.

Compared with Model X / S, the HW 4.0 hardware on Model Y is obviously a “castrated version”, for example, the independent GPU and better audio drivers are removed, and cheaper non-ECC memory is used, which seems to remove the previous new Added two additional screen display interfaces.

In addition, the direction of the Model Y’s HW 4.0 Ethernet interface is also different from that of the Model X/S, which seems to cancel the previously added third interface.

According to reports, the HW 4,0 gateway chip and its supplier are also different from those of Model X/S. The chip was previously only available on Model 3/Y produced by the Chinese factory, and now it seems to have been applied to models in all regions.

In other respects, Model Y’s HW 4.0 hardware seems to have removed the 3 new camera interfaces previously added on Model X / S.

It is said that Model Y’s HW 4.0 motherboard should only be a beta version, and the hardware of the production car may change. He also said that he is working on removing the Autopilot motherboard to see if there are other interesting changes.

Previous teardowns have shown that Tesla HW4 will use more camera interfaces, which is considered another step towards pure vision autonomous driving. However, it was reported that a radar unit was found after the Model X was disassembled, but this unit obviously should not exist, because according to Tesla’s introduction in the past two years, HW4 and its long-term plan do not need radar.
