Tesla Model 3 and Y batteries to get major upgrade next year

According to foreign media reports, news on social media shows that Tesla will upgrade the batteries of its two best-selling cars, Model 3 and Model Y, next year. Some models use 4680 batteries, and some use BYD. supplied blade battery.

From the news on social media, it appears that Tesla is planning to add two new types of batteries to the rear-wheel drive versions of the Model 3 and Model Y, namely a lithium iron phosphate blade battery made by BYD and a Model 3 Performance battery with an increased battery capacity of 70 kWh.

The all-wheel drive and high-performance versions of the Model 3 and Model Y, on the other hand, are scheduled to be upgraded to 4680 batteries, the specific battery capacity specifications of which are not yet known.

From reports in the foreign media, it appears that the current battery capacity of Tesla’s rear-wheel drive versions of the Model 3 and Model Y, 50 kWh and 55 kWh respectively, will be significantly increased if upgraded to 70 kWh.

Tesla’s Texas Superplant and Berlin Superplant, which are already producing the Model Y with the 4680 battery, would be full global adopters of the all-wheel drive and performance versions of the Model 3 and Model Y if they were upgraded with this battery, and would not be limited to these two Superplants.

Although there is still only news on social media that Tesla will upgrade the batteries in the Model 3 and Model Y next year, and there is no mention of exactly when the upgrade will take place next year, news of the adoption of the 4680 battery and BYD Blade batteries has come up before, and it is no surprise that the future adoption of these two types of batteries will not be a surprise.

It was reported last month that BYD had started supplying blade batteries to Tesla’s Berlin super factory and that the relevant models had been approved by the EU and were expected to roll off the production line in late August or early September.

The 4680 battery, which was introduced by Tesla at its Battery Day event in September 2020, has a higher energy density and higher output. In addition to Tesla, manufacturers such as Panasonic and LG New Energy are also working on this battery and are preparing for production. Two years after the announcement, it is expected that Tesla will adopt this battery on a large scale.
