Tesla leads the U.S. EV market, accounting for nearly 60% of the market share

According to Automotive News, Tesla leads the electric vehicle (EV) market in the United States in terms of new car registrations and market share, according to data from Experian.

In the first seven months of this year, Tesla registered 390,377 new vehicles in the United States, a 50% increase from the same period last year, and captured 59.5% of the U.S. EV market. Chevrolet is in second place, with nearly 40,000 new registrations of its electric vehicles between January and July, giving it a 6% market share. Ford is third, with 33,955 new registrations of its electric vehicles in the first seven months, giving it a 5.2% market share. The total battery electric car market saw 655,986 new registrations during the period, an increase of 67% and a share of 7.2% of the total car market.

It is noticed that Tesla’s new registrations in July alone reached 60,769, while all other EV manufacturers combined had only 48,566 new registrations in the United States. Meanwhile, J.D. Power said Tesla had an estimated 8.5% share of the light-vehicle market in July, according to J.D. Power, which it credited with driving EV adoption across the United States.

Tesla’s most popular models are the Model Y, with 236,041 new car registrations in the first seven months, more than double the same period last year, and the Model 3, with 131,381 units, up 21%. Meanwhile, the Model S and Model X dropped 51% and 14%, respectively, to 8,439 and 14,462 units.

Ford, for its part, saw its EV market share fall from 6.9% to 5.2%, with 33,955 new vehicle registrations in the first seven months. The F-150 Lightning pickup accounted for 11,883 units, surpassing the Rivian R1T’s 7,611 units.
