Tesla increased OEM orders from TSMC to expand production of Dojo D1 chips

According to Taiwan’s “Economic Daily News”, Tesla is increasing Dojo D1 supercomputer chip orders. Dojo D1 is Tesla specially designed for Dojo supercomputer custom chip, by TSMC foundry.

Tesla plans to double the production of Dojo D1 chips to 10,000 chips next year. People familiar with the matter said, Orders for TSMC’s Dojo D1 chips are expected to continue to increase through 2025, given the scalability of the Dojo supercomputer.

Tesla uses the Dojo supercomputer to train AI models for Advanced Driver Assistance and Fully Self-Driving Systems. The Dojo supercomputer’s contribution to the company’s operations is likely to grow even more with the launch of programs like FSD, self-driving cabs, and Optimus robots.

Tesla’s increased Dojo D1 chip orders also help TSMC. TSMC’s deal with Tesla has reportedly led to an increase in orders related to high-performance computing. While neither Tesla nor TSMC have commented on the matter, the industry is publicly aware of the business relationship between the two companies.

With the addition of the Dojo supercomputer, Tesla may be able to reduce its reliance on NVIDIA’s GPU chip products. Tesla has been an important customer of NVIDIA, and there are reports that Tesla recently enabled a new supercomputer with 10,000 NVIDIA H100 GPU chips. The system, which cost about $300 million, will be used for a variety of AI applications.

Tesla’s official AI account posted a series of posts on social media X about the Dojo supercomputer, showing its ambitious goals. Tesla said the Dojo supercomputer began production in July 2022 and expects to be in the top five in the world by January 2024 in terms of computing power. By October 2024, Tesla expects the Dojo supercomputer to have a computing power of 10 billion billion times per second (100 Exa-flop).
