Tesla has seen a sharp drop in car recalls this year, down from millions last year

Tesla solved another recall by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) through a software update last week. Recent data shows that Tesla’s number of car recalls this year will increase from Last year’s number dropped from millions to hundreds of thousands, which seems to indicate continued improvements in production quality.

Tesla recalled a total of 3.8 million vehicles in 2022, according to NHTSA. But so far in 2023, Tesla has recalled only about 439,000 vehicles, and a recent Barron’s report estimated that the automaker will recall about 550,000 vehicles by the end of the year. .

It is noted that so far, more than 16 million vehicles have been recalled by all automakers in 2023, while the total number in 2022 has reached 19 million vehicles. Although Tesla’s recall rate was slightly above average in 2022, it is expected to have lower recall rates this year.

Tesla’s recall last week affected 55,000 Model X vehicles due to a faulty controller that failed to detect or display information about low brake fluid levels. Tesla rolled out an OTA software update to fix the issue, which doesn’t require customers to take their vehicles to a service center.

While some of Tesla’s past recalls have required customers to make repairs at a service center, many have not, and some have criticized the use of the word “recall” in these cases. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also criticized the use of the word on multiple occasions, calling it “totally wrong” in a February tweet.
