Tesla App Allegedly Bypasses Apple App Store Inside Purchase Rules

Tesla application allows owners to control and monitor their cars through the iPhone phone, the application has a service called “Advanced Connections”, this service is $9.99 per month (currently about RMB 72), and allows owners to unlock some features, such as navigation in the car, video streaming, music playback and so on. However, according to Gizmodo, Tesla did not follow the rules of Apple’s app store, the App Store, and did not use Apple’s in-app purchase system to collect the fee.

The Apple App Store has very strict rules that require developers to use Apple’s in-app purchase system for any feature or service that requires a fee. This allows Apple to take a percentage of each transaction, ranging from 15% to 30%. Apple believes it is doing this to ensure the safety and experience of its users, as well as to maintain the fairness and health of the platform.

Tesla’s Advanced Connections service was originally intended to be used only on the in-vehicle display, eliminating the need to use Apple’s in-app purchasing system. However, Tesla later added a feature called “View Live Camera”. As long as the vehicle is in Sentinel Mode, this feature allows the owner to view what’s going on around the vehicle while it’s parked on their phone. This feature is apparently available on the phone and requires a fee to use. According to Apple’s rules, Tesla would have to offer Apple’s in-app purchase option in this case, but instead of doing so, Tesla is just using its own payment system.

This means that Tesla is bypassing Apple’s app store rules, which Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly criticized, calling it “like a 30% tax on the Internet. He’s also backed Epic Games, which has been in a long-running legal battle with Apple over the App Store rules.

It’s worth noting, however, that all apps submitted to Apple’s App Store go through a review process. It seems that Tesla’s lack of use of Apple’s in-app purchase system hasn’t caught Apple’s attention. But now that this news has broken, things could change. it
