Tencent 2022 Annual R&D Big Data Report: 2.94 billion lines of code knocked in one year

The report, produced by Tencent’s Technology Committee, discloses important data on Tencent’s R&D investment, R&D effectiveness, and open source collaboration in 2022.

The Report shows that in 2022, the proportion of Tencent’s internal R&D staff will reach 74%, which means that on average, three out of every four Tencent employees will be engaged in R&D work.

The Report shows that last year, Tencent added more than 7,000 R&D projects, an increase of 19.8% compared to 2021; 2.94 billion lines of code were added, 210,000 new code libraries were added, and 127,000 code submissions were made on average daily.

In addition to the number of R&D projects, code quality is also a key focus of Tencent’s R&D. In 2022, Tencent will complete 2.62 million code reviews, an increase of 21.8% compared to 2021, and the code review participation rate will reach 74.6%. The total time spent on code reviews reached 460,000 hours, with 12.6 hours of code review time per capita and 15.3 comments per 1,000 lines of code review, an increase of 75.4% year-on-year.

In addition, with the rapid development of cloud computing and other technologies, Go has become the most popular programming language in Tencent. It is worth noting that the use of new generation programming languages such as Kotlin, Swift and Rust is growing at a faster rate because of their security, convenience, speed and portability.

The Report also shows that, as of December 2022, Tencent had filed more than 62,000 patent applications and granted more than 30,000 patents in major countries and regions around the world.

In terms of basic software research and development, Tencent has the capability of self-researching the entire chain of server operating systems, and has also initiated and deeply participated in the OpenCloudOS open source community. As the “crown jewel” in the field of basic software, Tencent’s cloud database TDSQL has a 100% self-developed core code rate and is the first in China in terms of OLTP transactions and lightweight transaction use cases, serving seven of the top ten banks in China.

In terms of cutting-edge technology innovation, Tencent has released three self-developed chips for three major scenarios: AI inference, video processing and high-performance networks, and is promoting the large-scale application of self-developed chips in Tencent’s actual business scenarios.
