Tech enthusiasts have successfully modified a 24-inch iMac by removing the chin to achieve a full screen and also adding a backlit Apple logo on the back, the modification was carried out by a Chinese technician. AioTech took inspiration from Apple’s 2002 iMac G4. The device features thinner but evenly spaced bezels on all four sides.
As for how the technicians modified the device, it wasn’t that simple. Technicians had to open up and cut off the device’s chin, then grind the edges to look exactly like the top to give the device a uniform look and feel. In addition, the technicians designed a new housing for the back, which has a larger area for the logic board and ports. The enclosure was then 3D printed for testing and then carved out of aluminum for final fabrication.
Once the enclosure was ready, technicians arranged the iMac’s components in a place where they would not collect heat. Since the case is now smaller than before, heat dissipation can be a problem, and they took appropriate measures to minimize the impact of the smaller enclosure. With the new case, the technicians also thought it would be a good idea to add another hardware feature, the backlit Apple logo. Since the design was inspired by the iMac G4, it made sense for the technicians to add an illuminated Apple logo.
Apple’s logo is made of acrylic, which reminds us of the old MacBook models with a glowing Apple logo on the back. For the color choice, AioTech’s technicians designed the case in space gray, while the display bezel is painted black, and the effect looks surprisingly good.
