TechInsights: Global online smartphone sales expected to fall 2% year-on-year in 2023

TechInsights wireless smartphone strategy (WSS) service recently released a research report pointed out that the global smartphone online sales will decline by 2% in 2023 year-on-year.

TechInsights analysed that the global smartphone carrier channel share is expected to continue its slow recovery from 2022 to 2023. It is expected to peak in 2025 (driven by 5G demand and the launch of Apple and other folding-screen products), signalling the channel’s maturity (in line with demand for 5G smartphone sales), before declining throughout the forecast window until 2028.

According to TechInsights, sales in the carrier channel occur primarily in brick-and-mortar shops with face-to-face interactions with sales reps through offline channels. Handset vendor direct sales and pure e-commerce are expected to gain market share at the expense of large retailers, phone retailers and independent retailers during the forecast window through 2028.

As previously reported, according to TechInsights, smartphone sales during this year’s 618 period were 13.4 million units, down 7 percent year-on-year, which can be seen as a further weakening of online sales this year.

The data show that during this year’s 618 Apple, millet and Honor shipments are still ranked in the top three, of which Apple iPhone phone sales during this year’s 618 was 5.628 million, market share as high as 42%, occupying the first position on the list; ranked second millet phone sales during this period of 3.752 million, occupying 28% market share; Honor phone sales of 1.206 million, ranked third on the list. The second-ranked Xiaomi phone sold 3.752 million units during this period, occupying 28% market share; the Honor phone sales of 1.206 million units, ranked third in the list, market share of 9%.
