Dolby has announced a new Dolby Atmos feature that pairs your TV’s built-in speakers with other wireless speakers in the room. The technology, officially called Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, will debut on TCL TVs in 2024.
Dolby explains that FlexConnect can “intelligently optimize sound” based on the layout of the room and the placement of the speakers. The company says the technology will free users from the sound constraints of room size, furniture positioning or the location of electrical outlets.
FlexConnect will allow speakers to be placed anywhere in the room and calibrate each speaker to the sound of the TV, creating a unique Dolby Atmos custom profile for each user’s home.
Dolby says that since the acoustic mapping is done using the microphone built into the TV, setup is quick and easy. These components position each speaker before performing the aforementioned audio calibration, “for a more consistent immersive sound experience no matter where you sit in the room”.
It is noticed that FlexConnect can adjust the sound effect of each speaker, even the built-in TV stereo. For example, if the system notices a pair of speakers at the front of the room, it can adjust the audio so that the TV handles most of the dialogue and the speakers take care of the rest of the front soundstage. If there are two speakers in the back of the room, the TV will handle the dialogue and the part of the sound that needs to come from the front of the room.
