The Tata Group will begin assembling Apple iPhones in India after Wistron approved the sale of its Indian manufacturing unit.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s Deputy Minister of Information Technology, said in a post on X (Twitter) that Tata will start manufacturing iPhones in India for the domestic and global markets.
A statement shared by Rajeev that Wistron’s board of directors approved the sale of Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing India Private Limited to Tata Electronics Private Limited for about $125 million (currently about RMB 915 million). Wistron did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Apple has been looking at India as its next major growth driver as it looks to shift some of its production away from China. Apple began assembling iPhones in China with Wistron in 2017, and has since expanded through contracts with companies like Foxconn and PEGATRON.
Wistron is one of the assemblers of Apple’s iPhone SE and iPhone 6s smartphones. Later on, Lucent Precision announced that it had acquired part of Wistron’s iPhone business for $472 million, thus becoming Apple’s first mainland Chinese foundry.
