Microsoft today upgraded its Windows package manager (WinGet) to add support for .zip packages. In the latest 1.4 release, support is available for extracting and running installers from Zip archives, or installing one or more portable packages from a zip archive.

The WinGet open-source community is also pushing forward with other new features, and if you use multiple package managers, the upcoming introduction of command aliases will help you remember them. There will also be a new “wait” parameter to keep winget.exe open so that it can be called from other applications.

Windows Package Manager is a free and open-source package manager developed by Microsoft for Win10. It consists of a command line utility and a set of services for installing applications. Independent software vendors can use it as a distribution channel for software packages.

Users can use the winget command line utility on Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers to discover, install, upgrade, remove and configure applications. This tool is the client interface to the Windows Package Manager service.
