WDE is a free, non-activated, 90-day virtual machine environment that provides developers with the tools they need to create Windows applications. These tools include Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition with USP, .NET Desktop, Azure, and Windows App SDK for C# enabled workloads, pre-installed Windows subsystems Linux 2 (fixed to the taskbar) and Ubuntu, installed Windows Terminal, and Windows Developer Mode enabled. Windows Developer Mode enabled.

The virtual machine allows users 90 days of free access to Windows 11 Enterprise Edition, which also includes the software environment needed to develop applications for Windows 11:

Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition with support for UWP, .NET Desktop, Azure, and the Windows Application SDK for C# workloads.

Linux subsystem WSL 2, with Ubuntu installed by default.

Windows Terminal terminal.

Developer mode enabled.

Users can download and run the Windows development environment using VMware (Workstation Player and Workstation Pro), VirtualBox, Parallels, or Hyper-V. The virtual machine can be used for free for 90 days, after which an activation reminder will appear, although the user can’t actually activate it, as the virtual machine is only an evaluation version of the system.

Windows Development Environment version 2309 is valid until December 19, 2023. The official Microsoft website and select the desired format. Please note that at least 70GB of free space and 8GB of RAM are required to download WDE.

WDE contains four different virtual machine files for virtual machine software such as VMWare, Hyper-V, VirtualBox and Parallels. Users can simply download the appropriate files, import them into the virtual machine software, and run Windows 11 systems with almost one click.

WDE provides Windows 11 Enterprise Edition (build 22621.1702) and the following development tools and components:

Note that a minimum of 24GB of disk space is required to download Microsoft’s Windows 11 Virtual Machine. Users have until August 9, 2023 to use these virtual machines without activating or purchasing a Windows key (keys for Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 are also available if they match the SKU). Once the evaluation period expires, the OS will turn the desktop background black, start popping up constant activation notifications, and automatically shut down every hour. However, Microsoft releases monthly updates to the WDE that extend the expiration date (version 2304 will expire on April 28, 2023). The current version of WDE, 2305, will expire on August 9, 2023. At that time, users will be able to activate the OS with a real key or update to a higher version of WDE.

Windows 11 Development Environment version 2302 is based on Windows 11 Build 22621.1265 (Windows 11 version 22H2 Moment 1), which users can update to the Moment 2 update (optional KB5022913) immediately after setting up the VM.

Although users can use the VM without activation, certain features still require a license key. For example, personalization settings cannot be changed. Microsoft also warns that after May 23, 2023, the desktop background will go black, users will see constant activation notifications, and the virtual machine will shut down hourly. However, Microsoft will likely release an updated version before this one expires (the last update was on January 21, 2023).

Users can download the latest Windows 11 virtual machines from Microsoft on their website. They require at least 21GB of free space on your computer’s hard drive.
