Microsoft has announced that the “Windows 11 2022 Update” is available in more than 190 countries today, with version 22621.521, and all users can download it from the official website (click here to jump to the official website).

Windows 11 has an annual feature update policy. Windows 11 feature updates will be released in the second half of each year and come with 24 months of support for Home, Professional, Professional Workstation and Professional Education editions, and 36 months of support for Enterprise and Education editions.

For monthly security updates, Windows 11 uses the familiar Windows cumulative update process, also known as “B” releases, Tuesday patches, or Tuesday updates. These monthly releases will continue to include all previous updates to continue to protect your device and keep you productive.

With the arrival of the first major update to Windows 11, Microsoft has focused its innovations on four key areas designed to “make your everyday life easier”.

  • Making it easier and safer for everyone to use a PC.
  • Making people more productive.
  • Make Windows the best place to connect, create and play.
  • Delivering greater security, manageability and flexibility in the workplace.

▲ System-wide live captioning in Windows 11

Microsoft brings a range of new accessibility features to 22H2, including system-wide live captioning, which automatically generates captions from any form of audio content on Win11. There’s also Voice Access, which allows users to control their PCs and compose text by voice, and Narrator Natural Voice, which brings users closer to natural speech and more pleasant audio to help with reading or browsing the web.

In addition, Microsoft has brought some new features to Microsoft Defender and updated a range of Microsoft 365 security features in the US. Microsoft claims that Windows 11 is the most secure version of Windows to date.

On the productivity front, Microsoft will help users be more productive with enhancements to the Snap layout, new Focus features, and performance and endurance optimizations.

In addition, Microsoft has changed the alignment layout for multitasking, making the Snap layout more versatile with better ‘touch’ capabilities to quickly search for multiple browser tabs in Microsoft Edge.

In addition to this, Microsoft has introduced two features, “Focus on Meetings” and “Do Not Disturb”, to help users minimize distractions while working.

▲ Windows Studio Effects in Windows 11

Microsoft says that the PC is increasingly being used in scenarios that point to the realm of communication, creativity and gaming, so they have improved Windows Studio Effects video and audio calling capabilities in the 22H2 update, bringing new development tools, additional gaming features and Microsoft Store updates.

▲ Clipchamp in Windows 11

In this release, Microsoft has implemented game performance optimizations, improved game lag and support for features such as automatic HDR and variable refresh rates for windowed games. In addition, Microsoft has built-in Windows 11’s Game Pass functionality directly through the Xbox app and brought more than 20,000 Android apps and games to Win11 devices that meet specific feature hardware requirements by partnering with Amazon to expand the number of Android apps to international markets.

Elsewhere, the new Windows 11 major release update 2022 brings new security features and new management tools designed to improve IT efficiency.

▲ Smart App Control in Windows 11

With the 22H2 update, Microsoft has also announced that it will take steps to improve the Windows update experience and focus on being energy efficient, carbon conscious and making your device as carbon friendly as possible, for example, Windows updates will be installed at specific times of the day.

▲ Tabs in File Explorer

Microsoft has also announced a number of additional feature updates coming in October.

  • The File Explorer update includes the long-awaited ‘tabs’ feature, where you can top (pin) important files for quick and easy access, as well as personalized suggestions based on OneDrive features and Microsoft 365 accounts.
  • Photos app. A new photo management feature will be introduced, bringing a gorgeous photo album interface that simplifies browsing, finding, managing and collecting, and you can also use OneDrive to quickly back up your photos and provide a ‘recap’ function.
  • Copy suggestion the Dev version has been updated to give you suggestions on what to do when you copy a phone number, or date and, for example, make a call using Teams or Skype, add a new event to your calendar, and more.
  • Taskbar overflow. Microsoft will add an overflow portal to the taskbar so you can quickly see all overflowed programs.
  • Share to more devices. You can quickly discover and share to more devices, including nearby shares.

Finally, Microsoft has also recommended a wave of new PCs with Win11 22H2 pre-installed, such as the next generation Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, and not surprisingly the next batch of new models with the new system pre-installed will be available en masse.

The next generation Surface Pro has been rumored for some time and according to the FCC’s certification documents, it is coming within the year. Microsoft Surface Pro 9 will arrive in October with Windows 11 version 22H2, File Explorer tab, improved security, Wi-Fi 6, 5G chip, and ARM+Intel processor.

The FCC stands for Federal Communications Commission and they certify communication products for consumers in the country, meaning that the product has been approved by the US government for electromagnetic interference and other features related to communication.

According to FCC document C3K1997, the Surface Pro 9 can use built-in 5G connectivity, Bluetooth 5.0, and offers Wi-Fi 6. This listing explicitly mentions support for “multi-band 5G NR, 802.11b/g/n/ax wireless LAN” confirming our suspicions that the company’s next-generation hardware will support 5G.

It’s also worth noting that, according to the FCC document, the Surface Pro 9 will be powered by an ARM processor. The document also mentions Qualcomm’s Intelligent Transport 3.0, which aims to expand 5G coverage and increase uplink speeds. It also optimizes the transmission of cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas.

Of course, in addition to the Snapdragon chip, the Surface Pro 9 will also be available as a traditional model with a built-in Intel processor.

In one of the FCC listings, Microsoft states that Surface devices support “open and closed configurations”, a phrase previously used in the dual-screen Surface Duo filing. However, network certification suggests that the device in the filing is definitely not a phone. All of these changes should result in better battery, wireless and overall system performance compared to previous Surface Pros, particularly the Surface Pro X series.

The Surface Pro 9 is expected to be announced in October, although an official release date has yet to be announced.

The new devices are expected to include 128GB+ of storage (each offering a choice of 5G and Wi-Fi-only connectivity). Paired with 8GB or 16GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage, one of the most powerful versions of the Surface Pro 9 is expected to come with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, and it is not known for the time being whether there will be any significant changes to the screen size or overall design of the range.

It’s worth noting that this information is based on the list we’ve seen, and product details aren’t clear until the lineup is confirmed by Microsoft.

The first major update of the year, Windows 11 version 22H2, is expected to start rolling out in a few weeks, and Windows Preview users are already experiencing new features such as an upgraded taskbar with drag-and-drop functionality, faster context menu operations, and a new Task Manager.

One of the notable changes in Windows 11 version 22H2 is the new Task Manager, which is getting a Microsoft Fluent Design system design, a WinUI 3.0 revamp and more. The Task Manager now looks more modern and uses a new layout with all the key options in the left column, similar to the Settings app.

More common tasks have been moved to the top bar to make room for new options in the Task Manager. In Windows 11 Preview Build 22588, Microsoft is testing a new feature that allows users to generate kernel or full fail dumps through Task Manager. When Windows fails to run properly due to a BSOD blue screen of death, a dump file is automatically generated.

The dump file generated by this event is called a system failure dump. Failure dumps can be generated using the control panel.

Starting with the next feature update, users will be able to use Task Manager to generate a crash dump, as shown in the screenshot. This feature is particularly useful because it makes it easy to solve multiple problems, as the crash dumps include the system memory records at the time of the crash.

Kernel Memory dumps contain all the memory used by the kernel at the time of the crash.

Such dump files are significantly smaller than full memory dumps. Typically, the size of a dump file is about one-third the size of the system’s physical memory. This amount can vary greatly, depending on your situation.

This dump file does not include unallocated memory or any memory allocated to user mode applications. It includes only memory allocated to the WINDOWS kernel and hardware abstraction layer (HAL), and memory allocated to kernel-mode drivers and other kernel-mode programs.

In most cases, this fault dump is the most useful. It is significantly smaller than a full memory dump, but it omits only those portions of memory that are less likely to be involved in a crash.

Since such dumps do not contain images of any user-mode executables that reside in memory at the time of the crash, it may also be necessary to set the executable image path if these executables are important.

By default, the kernel memory dump file will be written to % SystemRoot%\Memory.dmp.

If a second bug check occurs and another (or full memory dump) is created, the previous file will be overwritten.

To disable the display of missing page error messages when debugging kernel memory dumps, use the .ignore_missing_pages command.

Other new changes to Task Manager
As mentioned at the beginning, the Windows 11 Task Manager is being newly designed with Microsoft Fluent Design to make it more consistent with the rest of the operating system.

The Task Manager now looks more modern, and it resembles the Settings application.

As a result of these changes, Task Manager is now more touchscreen-friendly and Windows 11 continues to push the development of touch-friendly user controls.

In addition to the Fluent Design makeover, Microsoft has added “Mica,” a virtual design material that matches the background of an application to the desktop. And of course, there’s support for Dark Mode, which looks great against mica and bright desktop backgrounds.

One of the new features of Windows 11 Task Manager is “Efficiency Mode”, which allows limiting the system resources (CPU) of a specific program or process. This feature is particularly useful for improving battery efficiency, as it allows users to manually limit the CPU usage of selected processes while determining the priority of the desired process.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced many new features for Windows 11, including direct selection text operations in Teams, File Explorer tab support, and more. The new tabbed File Explorer has been used for testing, but most users are still waiting.

“Tabs integration is one of the most important feature updates to Windows File Explorer in years. The interface to File Explorer has remained largely unchanged since the release of Windows 8, and with the next update to Windows 11, Microsoft is adding tabs and a new Home home view to change File Explorer.

The “tabs” integration allows users to work more easily on multiple folders and directories, and the new Home view of File Explorer can also view recently used files, including documents and pictures from OneDrive.

Microsoft has begun rolling out the File Explorer tabbing feature to Windows Preview users as the company prepares for the fall 2022 release. However, it has not yet been officially released to the production channel.

Reports indicate that Windows 11 version 22H2 will be released in late September 2022, with a wider rollout planned for October-November. For now, it appears that Tabbed File Explorer will not be included in the next feature update release.

In fact, the RTM build of Windows 11 22H2 currently lacks tabbed support for File Explorer. After the release of Windows 11 version 22H2 in September, Microsoft may plan to turn on the tag set functionality in File Explorer through an upcoming cumulative update.

This means that tag support for File Explorer will arrive at a later date, probably in October or November.

Recent changes to File Explorer
In the meantime, Microsoft has fixed several File Explorer glitches and taskbar error bugs in the latest Windows 11 Dev preview release. It also fixes an issue that caused the left half of the File Explorer title bar to be impossible for some users to drag with the mouse or touch.

These fixes work with the tabbed File Explorer and are available to preview users in the Dev channel.
