Reuters recently reported that Volvo Cars is preparing to launch an “electrification blitz” by converting all of its major models to electric vehicles, including three SUVs and two sedans, and launching a luxury electric van designed to boost sales in Asia. Volvo expects to launch at least six new all-electric vehicles by 2026. Volvo aims to go fully electric by 2030, and its Australian subsidiary says it plans to sell only electric cars in that market by 2026.

At CES 2023, the new all-electric flagship SUV, the Volvo EX90, was unveiled, and the new car was shown at the Luminar and Google booths, respectively. It is expected to go on sale in early 2024.

The Volvo EX90 is equipped with Luminar Lidar technology, with a maximum detection distance of 600 meters, and a detection distance of 250 meters under 10% reflectivity conditions, and can even see tires 120 meters away.

Volvo unveiled its flagship electric vehicle, the EX90, a seven-passenger SUV that can travel 360 miles (about 580 kilometers) on a full charge. The debut of the Volvo EX90 is a “huge step forward” in the automaker’s quest to become an all-electric brand by 2030, and the SUV marks the brand’s entry into software-defined vehicles,” CEO Jim Rowan said at the live-streamed launch, with its sports technology and safety features expected to permeate other products as well.

The EX90 embodies Volvo’s key marketing selling point: no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo vehicle, and it aims to have electric cars account for half of the 1.2 million cars the company will sell worldwide by mid-decade.

According to Volvo, the standard system has 16 ultrasonic sensors, eight cameras, five radar systems, and a roof-mounted LIDAR that helps the car see things within 820 feet in total darkness.

All of these work together to form an invisible safety shield,” said Rowan, who said the EX90 is “the safest car Volvo has ever made. He said the system is also designed with artificial intelligence features that will adapt more to the driver’s behavior over time.

As the industry’s newest “software-defined car,” the SUV relies on core computing technology. The software technology was created with partners, including Google, Apple, NVIDIA, Luminar and Qualcomm.

The EX90’s 360-mile range puts it ahead of most new battery-electric SUVs on the overseas market, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model X. It also features bi-directional charging, using the car’s battery as an additional source of energy supply to power household appliances and also to feed energy back to the grid.

The automaker said Wednesday it plans to launch a Volvo app, details of which are to be determined and expand its subscription-based ownership and Volvo maintenance programs to more cities and countries.

For the coming luxury Volvo EX90 electric SUV, the manufacturer gave away some teaser images to build excitement for the vehicle’s launch. These teaser images show the car’s design details, whilst leaving netizens hoping for what is to come as we draw closer to the vehicle’s launch. The glimpse Volvo gives into the EX90 touch both the exterior and interior design as well as the infotainment system for driving.

The company kicked off this series of teasers with the infotainment system, which they say is simplified to provide what a driver needs. There are two screens, one for driving information and the other for media and navigation controls. The driver’s screen right in front of the steering gives all driving information including various modes available and autonomous driving controls and data.

Moving over to interior design, the company keeps things brief, leaving netizens to imagine what is to come. The design of the interior from the dashboard to the seats all come with a soft touch of ash, giving this electric SUV a fine touch of luxury. In addition to this, the Volvo EX90 doesn’t add so many screens to reduce any possible distraction that can take the driver’s eyes off the road, hence building on the company’s dedication to safety.

On the exterior, the company shows off the front with no grills and flush handles that sleep into the doors. On top of the car sits the LiDAR sensor for detecting vehicles ahead of the car to help build data for the driver’s screen. The sensor also helps to improve autonomous driving by keeping a tab on each vehicle on the road to coordinate hands-free driving.

The rims on the Volvo EX90 are also interesting as they do not have any visible openings or space from the teaser image. Volvo also says that this coming electric SUV will make use of sustainable materials in its build to help benefit the environment. More information on this coming vehicle will be made available by Volvo during or before the launch of their coming electric SUV on November 9.

Mercedes-Benz and Volvo Cars announced on Sept. 29 that they will suspend their respective plants in South Carolina, U.S., due to a massive storm that is approaching. Prior to that, the storm had already caused massive damage in the U.S. and resulted in at least seven deaths.

Volvo Cars’ South Carolina plant, which employs 1,500 workers, has stopped production of its S60 model at about 11 a.m. local time on Sept. 29. A company spokesman said the plant will shut down for the entire day on Sept. 30, with production scheduled to resume on Oct. 2.

Spokespeople for both Volvo and Polaris brands said the shutdown is not expected to have any impact on the planned production launch of the Volvo EX90 and Polaris Polestar 3 high-end large electric SUVs.

Mercedes-Benz also said its Ladson plant outside Charleston, S.C., will suspend production on Sept. 30 as a safety precaution. The plant, which employs about 1,600 people, is responsible for producing the Mercedes Sprinter and Metris vans.

A BMW spokesman said its plant in Spartanburg, S.C., was not affected because it was far enough away from the storm’s path.

The South Carolina Ports Authority said the seaports of Charleston and Georgetown will close all marine terminals on Sept. 30. Tropical Storm Ian is forecast to return to hurricane strength over the Atlantic Ocean and hit South Carolina on Sept. 30 with a strength that could pose a threat to the lives of local residents.

The governors of South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia declared a state of emergency in each state before Ian’s arrival.

Florida said more than 2.6 million homes and businesses in the state would be without power and some grids would have to be completely rebuilt. It remains unclear exactly how many people were killed in the storm. U.S. President Joe Biden (Joe Biden) said early indications are that the disaster could result in a large number of deaths. In Florida, Ian’s damage is estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars, while AccuWeather’s predicted losses amount to $100 billion.

On September 21, Volvo announced the name of the new generation of Volvo pure electric flagship SUV – EX90, the new vehicle will take the next generation of Volvo technology, equipped with a full stack of self-developed software + Luminar Lidar + DUS driver sensing system.

Volvo said that its new generation of pure electric flagship SUV named EX90 will make its global debut on November 9.

This model has previously passed the declaration in Europe, based on the SPA2 platform, which is the same platform as the Polaris 3.

It is worth mentioning that this is Volvo’s first pure electric flagship model, before the new energy vehicles are mostly plug-in hybrid models, the only pure electric model is the Volvo XC40 new energy version, but sales are poor, so the arrival of the EX90 also represents Volvo announced to enter the pure electric era.

According to the introduction, Volvo EX90 will be equipped with the LIDAR developed by Luminar in the United States, which is one of the industry’s longest detection distance LIDAR, under the condition of 10% reflectivity, the LIDAR detection distance can reach 250 meters, the comprehensive performance of the current market leading similar products.

Volvo says it expects to see a 20 percent reduction in mass casualty accidents with the use of the technology.

In addition, the LIDAR system will work in tandem with five body radars, eight cameras and 16 ultrasonic sensors, each of which can sense the external environment on its own merits, while also introducing a safety redundancy system.

Elsewhere, the new car will also feature the DUS dual-camera driver sensing system, which consists of a capacitive steering wheel and two cameras that capture information about the driver’s state and integrate it with the autonomous driving algorithm. When the driver’s attention is no longer focused on driving and support is needed, the machine will step in and make safe driving decisions (such as reducing speed, lane keeping or even braking the vehicle) via external sensors.

On the power side, Volvo did not reveal anything at all, no range, no battery capacity, no motor power and other information.

But with reference to the current technology of Volvo XC40, the probability of the new car using Ningde Time batteries is high, and it is expected that the 4WD performance version can also achieve 4.9 seconds to break 100.

Volvo announced that it will unveil its new flagship electric vehicle, the EX90 SUV, on Nov. 9. The EX90 is intended to replace the company’s current flagship, the gasoline-powered XC90 SUV, as Volvo transitions to an all-electric car maker by 2030.

The announcement comes after the Swedish automaker teased some interesting features, including long-range LIDAR and onboard sensors to detect when drivers may be distracted or intoxicated. These new technologies, some of which will become standard on vehicles, are designed to enhance Volvo’s safety reputation at a time when the auto industry is relying more on high-powered sensors and artificial intelligence-driven software to prevent fatal traffic collisions.

Volvo said the new electric vehicle will be equipped with the most advanced sensor set on the market, including eight cameras, five radars, 16 ultrasonic sensors and a cutting-edge LIDAR sensor. The LIDAR sensor mounted on the roof of the EX90 will help drivers avoid external obstacles, while two cameras inside the car will monitor the driver’s eye behavior to determine if they are paying attention or even if an obstacle may be present.

Depending on the driver’s attention, the EX90 will be able to take action when needed. If the driver is distracted, the camera will detect it and the vehicle will issue a series of warnings designed to bring attention back to the road. If the driver remains unresponsive, the vehicle will begin to slow down, eventually coming to a complete stop at the side of the road and activating the hazard lights.

Volvo has been talking about using in-car cameras to prevent drunk driving for years, and the automaker previously predicted it would release the technology in 2020. The company has staked much of its reputation on the safety of its premium vehicles, including being one of the first OEMs to implement a 112 mph (180 km/h) speed limit in all of its vehicles. With the release of the EX90 SUV, Volvo hopes to enhance that reputation with a host of new features.

But while LIDAR is ubiquitous in the AV industry, it is less common in passenger cars. Volvo is one of the few automakers to include high-powered sensors, which it says are an essential element in its quest to eliminate traffic fatalities altogether. Volvo says the EX90’s LIDAR has a range of 250 meters and can detect “something as small and black as a tire on a black road 120 meters ahead,” all at high speeds.

The EX90 will also be the first model to be equipped with Ride Pilot, Volvo’s new advanced driver assistance system that will allow the vehicle to drive itself on the highway without driver input. The Ride Pilot system will not require the driver to look at the road when activated, Volvo officials said. The feature will go live in California as a subscription service, pending approval from state regulators.
