On July 7, the 2023 SAIC Volkswagen ID.3 announced an immediate discount of up to 37,000 yuan, with prices starting from 125,900 yuan, triggering a wave of buying craze, with a month-on-month increase of 689%.

The length, width and height of the 2023 Volkswagen ID.3 are 4261/1778/1568 mm respectively, the wheelbase is 2765 mm, the trunk volume is 385L-1267L, and the curb weight is 1760kg; it is available in Aurora Green, Cyber Yellow, Crystal White, and Ion Gray. It is equipped with 4-door illuminated door handles, 18/20-inch wheels, suspended roof, Pure/Pro side markers, front/rear parking radar, reversing image, LED high and low beams, automatic headlights, etc.

The September car sales of major car companies (as of press time):

• Lantu Auto delivered 5,010 vehicles in September, a year-on-year increase of 99%; cumulative sales from January to September increased by 102% compared with the same period.
• Wuling Bingo sold 24,650 vehicles in September, with cumulative sales of 126,174 vehicles.

According to the Sino-Singapore Jingwei report, SAIC Volkswagen stated that the closure of the first plant and the combination of the second plant is a “transformation and upgrading” measure, and it is also “a part of the rational planning of the production layout of its electric vehicles and fuel vehicles.” After the transformation and upgrading of the No. 1 Automobile Factory, some fuel-fueled models will be transferred to Yizheng Factory for production, so as to give full play to the potential of the base outside Shanghai. As for how the first factory will use the waste heat in the future, SAIC Volkswagen said that the first automobile factory will further expand the functions of the R&D center. The second phase of the R&D center located in the first automobile factory has been fully put into use in 2021.

According to the plan of SAIC Volkswagen, in the future Anting will be built into a modern headquarters park with the world’s leading level integrating “management headquarters, intelligent manufacturing base, R&D and innovation base” and other functions.

ID.Aero: official sketches

The sketches suggest a quite aerodynamic look to the car. The car has a flowing design with its low front hood and a coupe-style swooping roofline. VW claims that the streamlined swooping roofline will help save energy and increase the range. The car would offer a 435-mile (700-kilometer) range. At the back, the car carries a conventional iD. Design with horizontal LED taillights flanking a light bar that runs the entire width of the car. Inside the four-door sedan generously offers space to be able to compete in the high-volume upper-middle-class segment Passat.

ID.Aero: specifications

ID.Aero is based on a stretched version of Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix  (MEB) platform. This way it would share the same electric motors and batteries as all the previous members in its family. Also, VW had recently confirmed that all the ID models will come with the GTX variant. Being GTX-badged performance models, these cars can utilize the most powerful dual-motor setup. ID.Aero would have 299hp AWD drivetrain and 82kWh battery. As the car will use the MEB platform the other power options available for the car would most likely be 204hp (150kW) RWD and 174hp (128kW)RWD. All options would use the same 82kWhbattery pack. Customers would have the choice of rear- and all-wheel drive powertrains.

The production version of the ID.Aero can be called as the electric equivalent to the combustion-engined Volkswagen’s electric limousine would first launch in China and later be available in North America and Europe.
