Beijing, May 24 evening news, Tesla CEO Elon Musk reportedly said Tuesday at a CEO summit held in London, before the mass layoffs at Twitter, many of the company’s employees are doing something that does not have much value.

Elon Musk added: “It’s probably true of many Silicon Valley companies, but maybe not as bad as Twitter.” Elon Musk further explained, “Twitter was in a situation where if there were 10 people in a meeting, only 1 person was on the gas and 9 people were on the brakes, so it couldn’t go very far.”

Elon Musk also added that other large tech companies can make further cuts without affecting productivity. Elon Musk also revealed at the summit that Twitter currently has about 1,500 employees, which is a more reasonable number.

But two people familiar with the matter previously said that the number of full-time employees at Twitter is actually closer to 1,000. By the end of 2021, Twitter will have more than 7,500 employees. But just a week after the successful acquisition of Twitter last October, Elon Musk fired about half of his staff. Since then, thousands more people have been fired or voluntarily resigned.

But Elon Musk said Tuesday that Twitter plans to re-increase the number of employees as the company moves toward being cash flow positive. With any luck, we could be cash flow positive next month,” he said. At that point, we’ll start adding staff to the company.”

Elon Musk also noted that some hiring has in fact already begun. Elon Musk previously hinted in a media interview that Twitter might rehire some of its previously fired employees.

According to Reuters, a new lawsuit claims that Twitter boss Elon Musk discriminated against workers with disabilities by asking employees to stop working remotely and to work “long hours at high intensity.

Dmitry Borodaenko, an engineering manager in California, said Twitter fired him this week after he refused to report to the office, and he filed a proposed class action lawsuit against the company Wednesday in federal court in San Francisco.

Borodaenko said Elon Musk recently called for Twitter employees to either return to the office or resign, in violation of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for workers with disabilities.

According to the suit, Borodaenko has a disability that makes him susceptible to New Coronary Pneumonia. The lawsuit alleges that many Twitter employees with disabilities were forced to quit because they were unable to meet Elon Musk’s demanding performance and productivity standards requirements.

In a separate complaint filed Wednesday in the same court, Twitter is accused of laying off thousands of contract workers without the 60-day notice required by federal law.

Twitter has previously faced a proposed class action lawsuit, also in San Francisco federal court, claiming it violated that law by abruptly laying off about 3,700 people, or half of the company’s workforce, after Elon Musk took over.

Elon Musk has said that the fired workers were given three months of severance pay. Under federal law, employers can offer workers 60 days of severance pay in lieu of giving notice.

Shannon Liss-Riordan, an attorney for the plaintiffs in all three pending cases, said that since taking over Twitter, Elon Musk has “put the company’s workers through a tremendous amount of pain and uncertainty in such a short period of time.

There is little legal precedent on whether remote work qualifies as a reasonable accommodation under the ADA, with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which enforces the ADA, saying in guidance issued in 2020 that remote work can be a reasonable accommodation when it does not impose an undue burden on employers.

Elon Musk just tweeted in response to Twitter’s massive layoffs. He said that the company was losing more than $4 million (about 28.8 million yuan) a day, and there was no choice for layoffs.

Elon Musk tweeted: “Regarding Twitter layoffs, unfortunately, when the company is losing more than $4 million a day, there is no choice. Everyone who leaves gets 3 months of severance, This is 50% higher than required by law.”

Twitter’s head of security and integrity, Yoel Roth, revealed on Twitter that the company’s layoffs yesterday led to the loss of about 50% of its employees. According to Bloomberg, Twitter is laying off 784 jobs in its San Francisco office, 106 in its San Jose, Calif., office and 93 in its Los Angeles office.

Elon Musk also tweeted earlier today defending the layoffs. He said pressure from advocacy groups caused advertisers to suspend spending on Twitter, leading to a sharp drop in Twitter’s revenue. “Even though we haven’t made any changes to content moderation and we’ve done everything we can to appease these activists. Extreme chaos! They’re trying to destroy freedom of speech in America,” Elon Musk said.

According to Bloomberg, Twitter has been sued because Elon Musk plans to cut about 3,700 jobs on the social media platform, accounting for half of its total workforce. Employees who say the company is laying off workers without sufficient notice violated U.S. federal and California law, and they filed a class-action lawsuit against Twitter in federal court in San Francisco.

In an email sent to employees, Twitter said the company plans to start laying off employees on Friday local time. Musk wants to cut costs at Twitter, the social platform he bought last month for $44 billion, people familiar with the matter said.

The U.S. federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act restricts large companies from making mass layoffs without at least 60 days advance notice. The class action seeks a court order requiring Twitter to comply with the act and restricting the company from requiring employees to sign documents that could waive their right to participate in the lawsuit.

Shannon Liss-Riordan, the attorney who filed Thursday’s complaint, said in an interview, “We filed this lawsuit tonight to make sure that employees are aware that they shouldn’t have to waive their rights and that they have an avenue to pursue their rights.”

Twitter did not currently respond to requests for comment.

Liss-Riordan also sued Tesla Inc. over a similar claim in June, when Elon Musk-led Tesla laid off about 10 percent of its workforce.

According to the “New York Times” report, Elon Musk ordered company-wide layoffs on Twitter on Saturday. It is unclear how many workers will be affected by the so-called layoffs, but sources told The New York Times that some sectors will be affected more than others.

Previous reports said Elon Musk wanted to reduce Twitter’s headcount by 75%. However, according to Bloomberg News, on Wednesday, local time, Elon Musk told Twitter employees that he did not plan to lay off 75% of the staff after taking over Twitter, according to people familiar with the matter.

Twitter currently has about 7,500 employees, and the New York Times noted that some managers have been asked to provide lists of departing employees.

Reports that layoffs may occur before November 1st, employees are expected to receive their stock grants on the same day, and this stock grant “generally accounts for a significant portion of their salary.” According to The New York Times, Elon Musk may not have to pay the money if he fires employees before that date. Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Elon Musk completed his $44 billion takeover of Twitter on Friday and fired numerous executives including former CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal and policy chief Vijaya Gadde after taking ownership.

It’s not entirely clear what Elon Musk plans to do with Twitter after the dust settles, but he recently said he wants the site to be a “common digital town square where beliefs of all kinds can be discussed in a healthy way without resorting to recourse.” Violence.” He calls himself a “free speech absolutist,” freeing users from worrying about the future of content moderation on the platform, but says he won’t make it a “free hellscape” and plans to create a content moderation committee.

An open letter is reportedly being circulated within the staff of social media platform Twitter Inc. protesting that it would be reckless for Elon Musk to make layoffs within the company. This follows reports that Elon Musk wants to make massive layoffs within the company, affecting about 7,500 people, after completing the acquisition of Twitter.

After the reports emerged, Twitter employees sent this open letter to Elon Musk and the board of directors in which they said in their minds, “Elon Musk plans to lay off 75 percent of Twitter’s workforce, a move that will harm Twitter’s ability to serve the public conversation. This massive layoff is reckless, undermines the trust our users and customers have in the platform, and is a clear act of worker intimidation. We cannot operate in an environment where there is constant harassment and threats.”

The letter also includes a checklist of requirements for the company’s “current and future leadership.” In addition to “establishing a fair exit policy for all workers,” the letter writers want Elon Musk to maintain existing employee benefits, including the right to work remotely. Elon Musk has previously criticized telecommuting and suggested that most Twitter employees should return to their offices.

It is unclear how many workers have signed the open letter so far. But it’s another sign of how chaotic the Twitter employee environment will become under Elon Musk. Currently, after a months-long legal battle, the deal appears to be on track to close by an Oct. 28 deadline.

Twitter is expected to make massive layoffs in the coming months, a media outlet said, citing people familiar with the matter. Elon Musk told potential investors in the deal to buy Twitter that he plans to lay off nearly 75 percent of the company’s 7,500 employees, people familiar with the matter said. During Tesla’s third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, Elon Musk said he had given too much to Twitter.

"While it is clear that myself and other investors are now clearly overpaying for Twitter, in my opinion, Twitter's long-term potential is an order of magnitude higher than its current value."

According to media reports, Twitter management plans to cut its payroll by $800 million by the end of 2023, which would mean a 25 percent reduction in the number of employees.

In a June question-and-answer session with Twitter employees, Elon Musk said he needed to “rationalize headcount” and said.

"Any employee who makes a significant contribution to Twitter should have nothing to worry about."

However, Elon Musk’s statement at the time came before he tried to back out of the deal in early July and Twitter subsequently sued him, seeking to enforce the terms of the merger agreement. Elon Musk apparently changed course after realizing that he might lose a legal battle with Twitter.

This is not the first time Elon Musk has mentioned that he will make significant layoffs following the Twitter acquisition.

Back in May this year, there were media reports that Elon Musk was planning to make about 1,000 job cuts at Twitter at that time. At the time, Elon Musk also announced plans to increase Twitter’s total workforce to more than 11,000 by 2025.

According to Statista, Twitter started with eight employees in 2008, a year later that number grew to 29, then increased significantly to 130 in early 2010, then more than doubled to 350 in January 2011. By December 2013, Twitter had 2,712 employees. Over the past decade, Twitter’s workforce has grown steadily, with a few declines. at the end of 2020, Twitter had 5,500 employees, and at the end of last year, the latest statistics put the company’s employee count at 7,500.

Despite steady employee growth, Twitter’s staff size is much smaller than Facebook’s. In December 2021, Facebook had 71,970 full-time employees, compared to 150 in 2006. Amazon, on the other hand, already employs more than 1.6 million people.

Layoffs are common during corporate mergers and restructuring. But Elon Musk’s current acquisition of Twitter remains uncertain, which may seem “too blunt.

Rob Enderle, a technology industry analyst at the Enderle Group, said.

"Announcing layoffs before your due diligence is complete is usually bad form, mainly because the new owner doesn't know what he or she has until it's complete and therefore can't determine if they are understaffed or overstaffed."

Elon Musk’s occasional signals of layoffs can make Twitter employees jittery, and many of them may choose to jump ship.

Some analysts also say that Elon Musk may not know the inner workings of Twitter like the back of his hand, and that it would be difficult for him to make precise judgments about such a content social media platform company based on his own experience.

Elon Musk has said he aims to increase Twitter’s annual revenue to $26.4 billion by 2028, up from $5 billion last year. In his plan, the share of advertising revenue, which currently accounts for about 90 percent of Twitter’s revenue, will drop to about 45 percent, while paid content will contribute about $10 billion in annual revenue.

Jim Purtilo, associate professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, observes.

"I don't know if 7,500 employees is just right for Twitter. However, few companies like to use the number of employees as a basis for comparison. Compared to other tech companies, Twitter is inherently more unique. Many of these employees may handle content review, others may sell ads, whether more or less, we don't know.

There may be some redundancy, but what are Twitter's goals for the future? Will adjusting the number and structure of its staff increase its profitability? These are the things that the market will have to watch. I think the ultimate driver of staffing adjustments will be the expectation of profitability."
