A new study by energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie shows that Tesla has installed only 3,000 solar roof systems in the United States since it began peddling its solar roof technology seven years ago. This installation rate is far less than Tesla’s previous guidance expectations and ambitions for what it calls “solar glass” roof tiles. Wood Mackenzie noted that Tesla had said in late 2019 that its goal was to produce 1,000 solar roofs per week and install 1,000 per week in the first half of 2020.

However, the report shows that the average weekly installation of Tesla solar roofs in 2022 will be just 21 units. In the first quarter of last year, Tesla’s average weekly installations in the U.S. reached a high of 32 units. Wood Mackenzie said Tesla solar roofs will account for less than 0.03 percent of the approximately 5 million new roofs to be built in the U.S. in 2022.

The report once again reveals that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been slow to integrate this solar business into Tesla since acquiring solar company SolarCity in 2016, a solar installation company founded by Elon Musk’s cousins Peter Rive and Lyndon Rive founded and operated with his help.

Tesla’s solar division later responded on Twitter, saying, “This study is dead wrong.”

Sources familiar with the matter said Tesla is working on a new version of the Solar Roof (Solar Roof v3.5), which is currently being tested in employees’ homes before being officially launched, Electrek reports. It’s not clear what the new version will be, but Tesla has been focusing on the durability and ease of installation of the solar roof lately, the report said. If testing goes well, Tesla expects to launch the new version of Solar Roof when installation resumes at the end of this year.

At the time of its launch, CEO Elon Musk cited it as a key product to accelerate solar power deployment, and his goal is for Tesla to be producing 1,000 new solar roofs a week by the end of 2019. All along, Tesla has been far behind on that goal, but we didn’t know how far behind until earlier this month. The company has never released data on its solar roof installations.

Last month, Electrek obtained solar roof installation data for the first time and confirmed that Tesla deployed 2.5 megawatts of solar roofs in the second quarter of 2022, or about 23 roofs per week. In addition, Tesla has suspended its solar roof installation schedule in almost all markets in the U.S., the only country where Tesla has installed solar roofs.

We now know that Tesla aims to continue installing its own solar roofs in the fourth quarter and that it is developing a new version in the meantime.

In 2017, Tesla had planned to install 1,000 solar roofs per week after acquiring solar power company SolarCity. Today, however, five years later, Electrek says Tesla’s solar roof installation rate is far less than expected.

According to Electrek, Tesla deployed 2.5 megawatts of solar roofs in the second quarter of 2022. That equates to about 260 medium-sized (9.6 kW) solar roofs installed by Tesla last quarter, or 20 per week. Even assuming only 5 kilowatts of power per solar roof, Tesla is installing only about 38 solar roofs per week, which is less than 4 percent of its goal.

According to Techcrunch, the slow pace of Tesla’s solar roof installations may be related to the difficulty of installing roofs and supply chain issues, with Techcrunch saying that Musk said there is no standard process for installing solar roofs and that he severely underestimated the difficulty of installing some roofs.

Meanwhile, Tesla reported a significant drop in its solar deployments in the first quarter of 2022, which the company attributed to delays in the import of certain solar modules. It’s worth noting that Tesla said last year that solar roofs would rise from $65,000 to $75,000 because of its restructuring of solar roofs, which increased the complexity of the roofs.

IT House learned that the solar roof belongs to a type of photovoltaic power generation, which combines the roof and photovoltaic into one, directly embedding
