According to people familiar with the matter, plans to expand Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory have been delayed. Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory is the company’s first manufacturing plant in China and China’s first electric vehicle factory wholly owned by a foreign automaker. It is also the company’s third Gigafactory in the world. The factory currently produces the Model 3 and Model Y.

Since breaking ground in 2019, the facility has rapidly grown into one of the company’s most important. Today, the factory is Tesla’s largest by volume of vehicles and is the company’s main export hub.

At present, Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory has completed two phases of expansion and is estimated to be able to produce about 1 million vehicles per year. The factory was originally planned to start the third phase of expansion in mid-2023 to increase the annual production capacity of the factory to 2 million vehicles.

In addition to expanding the Shanghai Gigafactory, Tesla also plans to expand its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. Foreign media reported that Tesla submitted an expansion application to the Texas licensing and regulatory department on January 9. The company plans to build 4 projects, some of which are planned to start construction within a few weeks.

Like other electric car companies, Tesla is facing slumping demand in China, the world’s largest auto market. In December 2022, foreign media reported that Tesla will extend the production reduction plan started in December last year to January 2023, following the reduction in production at the Shanghai Gigafactory in December last year.

Tesla’s leaked internal plan shows that its Shanghai Gigafactory will be in continuous production for 17 days from January 3 to January 19, 2023, and will suspend production from January 20 to January 31, 2023. The time is longer than the Lunar New Year holiday.

According to Reuters yesterday, an internal planning document showed that Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory will be in continuous production for 17 days from January 3 to January 19, 2023, and then in January 2023. Production of electric vehicles will be suspended from 20th to 31st January, which is longer than the Lunar New Year holiday (21st to 27th January). This means that the production reduction plan at the plant that started in December 2022 will be extended until 2023.

According to the report of Car Emperor, in response to the above news, Tesla responded, “Tesla’s holiday information posted on the Internet is not accurate. In fact, most employees of the Shanghai Gigafactory will have a holiday on January 20-28. This will be one day longer than before and after the statutory holiday, so that everyone can flexibly arrange the time to return home. Some employees have spent the holidays on the spot for the past two years, and have not been home for the New Year for several years. At the same time, some workshops still need to continue to operate at high speed during this period , We have already made relevant arrangements and preparations.”

For reference, in the last week of December 2021, Tesla’s Shanghai plant remained in normal operation and only had a three-day break during the 2022 Lunar New Year.

In addition, not long ago, Reuters also reported that, according to an internal notice and informed sources, “Tesla has suspended production at the Shanghai Gigafactory on December 24, 2022. Most of the shift plans have been suspended.” Tesla responded by saying: “The Shanghai plant will still maintain efficient production and excellent output in 2022. Vehicle production will proceed as planned next week (the last week of December). At the same time, after a year of hard work, the workers also took a break during the maintenance period of the production line. The workshops such as charging piles have not stopped the line, and (the outside world) said that the factory has stopped production is not entirely accurate. “

Tesla had previously set a goal of increasing production and electric vehicle deliveries by 50% in 2022. Analysts expect the company’s electric vehicle production to fall short of that target, based on forecasts for the soon-ending fourth quarter, an increase of closer to about 45% from the previous year.

Tao Lin, vice president of Tesla, also said that the localization rate of the industrial chain of the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory currently exceeds 95%, which is helping China’s new energy vehicle industry to build a world-leading complete industrial structure and strong consumption potential. The Tesla Shanghai Super Factory and the upstream and downstream enterprises of the automobile industry in many places in the Yangtze River Delta have accelerated their gathering.

It is worth mentioning that Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the National Passenger Car Market Information Association, said that the delivery volume of Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory in the first November far exceeded the 484,130 vehicles delivered in the whole year of 2021. It is expected that the Gigafactory will hit 750,000 vehicles this year annual sales of vehicles.

Cui Dongshu expects that the sales of new energy vehicles in my country from January to November will exceed 5.7 million. He believes that the production and sales of new energy vehicles in China this year are expected to exceed 6.5 million.

Although Tesla never discloses its monthly sales, we can get a glimpse of it through the data from the Passenger Federation, the China Automobile Association and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

September 20 news, according to foreign media reports, Tesla’s super factory located in Shanghai, the first phase has been completed and put into operation in 2019, the second phase began construction in 2020, completed by the production of Model Y, also began delivery in January of the following year.

Tesla’s super factory in Shanghai, although Phase I and Phase II have long been in operation, the electric cars produced, while supplying domestic users, are also being exported in large quantities, and have become an important export base for Tesla, but they are still optimizing and upgrading the production line of this factory, in order to increase production.

The latest reports from foreign media show that Tesla has recently completed a production line optimization at its Shanghai mega-factory, and the optimized production line will be commissioned from September 19 until November 30.

From the information released by Shanghai’s ecological environment service platform for enterprises and institutions, Tesla recently completed the second phase of the plant’s production line optimization project, which began construction on December 21 last year and was completed on September 19, that is, this Monday, lasting nearly nine months.

From the order of completion and operation, the first phase of the production line optimization and upgrade of Tesla’s Shanghai Super Factory, which is the plant for the production of Model 3, officially started construction on January 7, 2019, and after nearly 10 months of construction, it was ready for production and was approved for mass production of Model 3 in November of that year.

After the production line optimization and upgrade, the production efficiency will be higher, and the output of the first phase of Tesla’s Shanghai Super Factory is expected to be improved.

Foreign media mentioned in the report that Tesla is pushing to increase the daily production of Model 3 and Model Y in Shanghai Super Factory, to 2,200 units.

Among the vehicle factories Tesla has put into production so far, the Shanghai Super Factory is already the highest capacity factory. Tesla disclosed in its second-quarter earnings report released on July 20 that the Shanghai mega-factory has an annual capacity of more than 750,000 units, higher than the 650,000 units at the Fremont, California plant.

Earlier last week, foreign media reported, according to aerial photography, that a large number of Model 3 and Model Y have been parked in Luchao Port, which is about 6 kilometers away from Tesla’s Shanghai Super Factory, and all of them are expected to be exported to Europe. On Friday, foreign media reported that, according to aerial photography reports, the Tesla electric cars parked on the South Pier of Luchao Port exceeded expectations, and at least 7,000 Model 3 and Model Y produced by the Shanghai Super Factory were concentrated in this area port.

Judging from foreign media reports, Tesla shipped the electric cars produced by the Shanghai Gigafactory to Luchao Port last week. Aerial photographers initially expected that they would be shipped to other markets soon. , but last week, there were still a steady stream of Teslas shipped to Luchao Port.

In addition, foreign media also mentioned in the report that after entering July, the Tesla Shanghai Super Factory entered a two-week production line optimization and upgrade period, and did not produce at full capacity. The Model 3 produced during the production line optimization and upgrade period , most of them were shipped to Luchao Port.

Aerial photography sources also revealed that Australian users had previously asked when they could see the Tesla they ordered at the Haitong Wharf. Last week, they also went to the Haitong Wharf, which is far away from the Shanghai Gigafactory. They confirmed that the Tesla is basically the same. This terminal was abandoned, and Luchao Port is still the main export terminal.

Judging from the previous export status of the Shanghai Gigafactory, Luchao Port has concentrated more than 7,000 electric vehicles, and it may require two car carriers to transport them all out. When the Model 3 produced by the Shanghai Gigafactory was exported to Europe for the first time in October 2020, 7,000 units were shipped in two car carriers, arriving at European ports at the end of November and the beginning of December respectively.
