T-Mobile has begun rolling out its ultra-high-capacity 5G service, which can achieve speeds of up to 3.3Gbps using quad-carrier aggregation technology.

Simply put, the technology combines four different 5G channels into a single one for devices to use (IT note: only the Samsung Galaxy S23 series and X70-powered models like the OnePlus 11 seem to support it at the moment), which is even faster than the millimetre-wave (mmWave) 5G that Verizon and AT&T are touting.

Ookla recently reported that mmWave 5G download speeds in the US are currently up to 1.6Gbps, but mmWave 5G has limited range and device support, and is susceptible to common obstacles like trees and buildings.

The four channels used by T-Mobile include repurposed spectrum from T-Mobile and Sprint’s previously sealed 3G networks, including the 1900MHz channel, as well as two 2.5GHz channels and the 600MHz channel, according to the release.

According to a T-Mobile press release, the service is already live in some areas and “will be rolling out nationwide in the coming weeks,” but the carrier didn’t disclose specific locations.

In fact, AT&T and T-Mobile are working on similar upgrades, with AT&T saying earlier this year that it had aggregated two upload channels, while Verizon reported “upload speeds of more than 1 GB and download speeds of up to 4.3 Gbps in testing.”

But in any case, T-Mobile has been the first to commercialize it in the U.S. and has hit the 3Gbps throughput mark, something no other mobile carrier has been able to do.

Ulf Ewaldsson, T-Mobile’s president of technology, said that as the only (U.S.) company with an SA 5G network, “T-Mobile is the only provider bringing game-changing technologies such as quad-carrier aggregation to market.”

Publicly, T-Mobile rolled out 5G SA network coverage in November 2022, and it was the first U.S. carrier to achieve 3Gbps speeds via three-carrier aggregation. However, it wasn’t until the March 2023 release of iOS 16.4 that the Apple iPhone supported 5G SA networks.

U.S. telecom giant AT&T recently notified customers of a data breach that allowed attackers to access information related to customers’ “equipment upgrade eligibility.

The serious security breach, which affected about 9 million customer accounts, occurred in January 2023, the same month that T-Mobile suffered a massive data breach affecting about 37 million postpaid and prepaid accounts.

An AT&T representative said in an interview that the incident compromised customer proprietary network information (CPNI), including data such as the number of lines or wireless packages on an account. In addition, personally identifiable information such as names, wireless account numbers, wireless phone numbers and email addresses were exposed. In some cases, hackers also obtained additional customer information such as monthly payment amounts, expired amounts, package names, and monthly charges and/or minutes of use.

According to an AT&T spokesperson, federal law enforcement was notified of the unauthorized access to CPNI in accordance with FCC regulations.

The good news is that no credit card information, social security numbers or account passwords were involved in the breach, and AT&T’s own systems were not compromised. AT&T also confirmed that it has fixed the breach, the first time AT&T has faced such an incident in a long time.

Last summer, U.S. carrier T-Mobile released the results of production network tests showing that 5G standalone (5G SA) can deliver speeds of up to 3Gbps when combined with carrier aggregation (NR CA). Now the operator has officially launched its “Standalone Ultra Capacity 5G” network service.

T-Mobile said it is taking its only U.S.-wide 5G standalone (5G SA) network to the next level, lighting up Ultra Capacity 5G on 5G SA nationwide, a move that will unleash faster speeds for customers across the country while further reducing lag in the network with lower latency and improving the experience of applications such as gaming that require near real-time response.

T-Mobile believes that 5G is having a “meaningful impact” on its customers when it comes to smartphones, home Internet and disaster response, “but we’ve only scratched the surface of 5G.

While T-Mobile claims high speeds of 3Gbps, don’t expect to experience these blazing speeds on 5G-enabled devices everywhere or on the network.

The boosted speeds from the 5G SA rollout will first apply to the Samsung Galaxy S22 line of phones, “and it will expand to other devices in the near future in the coming weeks.”

T-Mobile hasn’t shared specifics yet, and it remains to be seen how much of a performance boost is expected in real-world use beyond the maximum 3Gbps test speed. But T-Mobile will be the first carrier to deliver performance as fast or faster than 5G millimeter wave using mid-band spectrum.

T-Mobile agreed Friday to pay $350 million to settle a class action lawsuit over a cyber attack in August 2021, GeekWire reported. In that attack, a hacker broke into its computer systems and stole sensitive data related to tens of millions of customers.

The Bellevue, Washington-based wireless carrier has also agreed to make an additional $150 million investment in data security and related technology this year and next, according to a filing Friday afternoon with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The proposed class includes more than 76 million customers, with several related cases consolidated, according to a copy of the proposed settlement filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri. the $350 million payout will be used to fund claims filed by class members, plaintiffs’ legal fees and administrative costs.

In its filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, T-Mobile said that if the court approves the settlement, it “will resolve virtually all claims brought by the Company’s current, former and future customers affected by the 2021 cyberattack.

According to a T-Mobile spokesperson, the company continues to cooperate with various regulatory agencies that are separately investigating the incident.

T-Mobile posted a statement about the settlement on its website Friday. The company said, “We are pleased to settle this consumer class action lawsuit as we continue to invest time, energy and resources to address this challenge.”

T-Mobile is expected to record a pre-tax charge of about $400 million in the second quarter as a result of the settlement, according to the SEC filing. The filing notes that the charge and $150 million in security investments were anticipated in its previous financial guidance to investors.
