How to upgrade the PS5 mainframe system software
If the system software update on the PS5 console is blocked, please restart the upgrade process. If the upgrade fails, please download the upgrade file to a USB drive by yourself and then follow the instructions below.

To manually update the PS5 system software.

  • Using a PC or Mac, create a folder named “PS5” on a USB drive formatted as FAT32. Within that folder, create another folder named “UPDATE”.
  • Download the upgrade file and save it in the “UPDATE” folder. Save the file as “PS5UPDATE.PUP”.
  • Insert the USB drive containing the files into the PS5 host.
  • To start the PS5 host in Safe Mode: Press and hold the Power button and release it after the second beep.
  • Select Safe Mode option 3: Upgrade system software.
  • Select Upgrade from USB storage device > OK.

If your PS5 host does not recognize the files, check that the folder name and file name are correct. Enter the folder name and file name using uppercase letters.

  • Restart the system software download on the PS5 host.
  • Press the PS key on the wireless controller to go to the Control Center and select Download/Upload.
  • Highlight System Software Upgrade, then select Error, then select Try Again.
  • If the download fails multiple times, use the USB stick to upgrade the system software on the PS5 host.

How to reinstall the PS5 host system software.

  • Reinstalling the system software on the PS5 main unit will remove all data on the PS5 main unit. This process is often referred to as a “factory” reset or “hard” reset.
  • Using a PC or Mac, create a folder named “PS5” on a USB drive formatted as FAT32. Within that folder, create another folder called “UPDATE”.
  • Download the reinstallation file (via the button below) and save it in the “UPDATE” folder. Save the file as “PS5UPDATE.PUP”.
  • Insert the USB stick containing the files into the PS5 system.
  • To start the PS5 host in safe mode: Press and hold the power button and release it after the second beep.
  • Select Safe Mode option 7: Reinstall the system software.
  • Select Upgrade from USB storage device > OK.

If your PS5 host does not recognize the files, check that the folder name and file name are correct. Enter the folder name and file name using uppercase letters.
