Recently, Sony filed a new patent for an MMO processing system that may be related to the company’s plans to create more real-time service games in the coming years. This new Sony patent details an MMO processing system that makes use of various networks, computing units, and clouds.

According to the patent, computers are assigned to process game interactions between one or more users in the game world. When the number of users exceeds a predetermined limit for a region, sub-regions and additional computations are allocated to continue to handle the interactivity in the game world.

The diagram, which exclusively uses the network, compute units, and the game cloud system as the central computation, outlines this process. In the diagram, each computed unit transfers information to the central compute via the network. The MMO processing system will most likely be used in a new PS game, as the patent applicant is Sony Interactive Entertainment. In addition, the patent also foreshadows the possibility that PlayStation will introduce third-party MMO games on PS5.

MMO games such as Final Fantasy 14 and Star Wars Armor have done well on the PS, and Sony could reap similar benefits with a refined MMO system on the PS5.
