Microsoft updated the Snipping Tool last week. In the latest version 11.2307.44.0, a new navigation bar and keyboard combination were introduced, and there is another item that was not included in the update log. The improvement is the introduction of the OCR function, which can recognize the text in the image and extract it to the clipboard.

This feature is called “Text actions” and Microsoft says it will be supported by AI and will be expanded to provide richer text actions.

However, the application of the text extraction OCR function and other applications overlap, Microsoft has long ago in OneNote and other official applications have been provided, in addition to PowerToys also has a function called “Text Extractor”.

It’s not clear when Microsoft will open up OCR for screenshot tools to all users, but it’s expected to be pre-installed in the Win11 23H2 update.

Not long ago Microsoft launched a new Snipping Tool app with built-in screen recording capabilities. While it’s nice to see that Microsoft is finally offering a native screen recording tool in its operating system, users found that the app lacked many basic features such as pausing the recording, changing the frame rate, and more. It’s a good thing that Microsoft has updated the app with some much-needed new features.

The latest Snipping Tool 11.2212.24.0 now supports pausing screen recording and also has a simplified mode switcher.

Unfortunately, the application still doesn’t allow changing the frame rate, which is capped at 30fps, and you can’t reposition the recording area when pausing.

The new version 11.2211.35.0 for the Snipping Tool application, a screenshot tool for Windows 11, is available for Windows Insiders in the development channel.

The most important aspect of the Snipping Tool update is the introduction of a built-in screen recording feature, where previously users had to use the Xbox Game Bar or third-party tools to record screens.

To start recording, update the Snipping Tool app from the Windows 11 Microsoft Store, then simply open the Snipping Tool app and click on a new screen recording.

Before starting screen recording, users will be able to select the part of the screen they want to record. Once finished, they can preview it before saving or sharing it with others.

Microsoft says that since this is an early beta version of the app, there are currently several known issues with the feature, and some users may experience a slight delay between clicking “Start” and actually starting to record the screen.

The feature should be rolled out to everyone as a regular app update or as part of the Windows 11 feature update when testing is complete, which usually takes a few weeks or months.
