Silicon Motion demonstrated the latest PCIe 5.0 SSD controller SM2508 at the FMS 2023 event.

Silicon Motion Technology said that the upcoming SM2508 is a PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe 2.0 SSD controller chip with optimized performance and power consumption, suitable for notebook computers, desktop computers and workstations, supporting 8 NAND channels, each The channel speed is up to 3600 MT/s, providing sequential read and write speeds up to 14GB/s and random read and write speeds of 2.5 million IOPS. According to Silicon Motion, the SM2508 has an ultra-low power consumption of ~3.5W, releasing the ultimate potential of PCIe Gen5 performance, and is suitable for a wider range of notebook computer applications.

According to previous reports, the speed of PCIe 5.0 SSDs currently on the market has reached 12.4 GB/s, and high-end models are basically equipped with small fans for active cooling. Take the GALAX model in the above picture as an example. It uses the Phison E26 main control, and the power consumption of the SSD at full load can reach 11.5W.

Silicon Motion previously announced that it will release an enthusiast SSD based on the SM2508 controller with the latest PCIe 5.0 x4 interface, offering speeds of around 13GB/s, by the end of 2022.

However, according to a new report from Tom’s Hardware, representatives from Wisepac said at CES 2023 that they expect the controller to be in volume production by early 2024, apparently much later than previously announced. In addition, Wisers will also launch a scaled-down quad version of the SM2508, the SM2507, in 2024.
