Soon after that, T-Mobile and SpaceX announced their partnership which will enable smartphones to communicate directly with satellites. This will enable users to call and connect with users across the globe using the satellites, and no dedicated network shall be needed.

Android 14 to bring support for Satellite connectivity

The Google SVP of Platforms and Ecosystems, Hiroshi Lockheimer, on Twitter has announced that they are working on building a new satellite communication network and the support for this will be added in the next version of Android.

Wild to think about user experiences for phones that can connect to satellites. When we launched G1 in '08 it was a stretch to get 3G + Wifi working. Now we're designing for satellites. Cool! Excited to support our partners in enabling all of this in the next version of Android!

While the present phone’s radio hardware will suffice, it is unclear what software modifications will be required. This also raises the question of whether the existing Android 13 smartphones will be able to get support for satellite network connectivity or not. However, there are high chances that the support won’t be provided in existing smartphones as they lack the proper hardware which is needed to allow the satellite connectivity system to work.

T-Mobile and SpaceX are anticipated to begin beta testing the new satellite in late 2023, around the time Android 14 is released. The service began with coverage for the United States, but the firms intend to expand it to include the entire globe. Support is now restricted to messaging and calling, but internet access will be available soon via satellite connectivity.
