As revealed at CES 2023, Samsung is committed to improving its device ecosystem and connectivity between different devices through its SmartThings platform. As part of its new strategy, Samsung is rolling out a massive update to SmartThings on its Galaxy Watch line of smartwatches. The update brings easier control to users’ wrist-connected devices.

The SmartThings version 1.1.08 update on the Galaxy Watch brings a number of key improvements and new features. Firstly, Samsung Galaxy Watch users can now swipe right from the dial to access SmartThings.

For the first time, Samsung Galaxy Watch users can now control more Samsung and third-party devices, including SmartTag, air purifiers, thermostats and blinds. These device categories could previously only be controlled via SmartThings on smartphones, but Samsung has now added support for the Galaxy Smartwatch.

Thanks to this SmartThings update, Galaxy Watch users can now live stream their home and doorbell cameras from the Next and Ring cameras (with WebRTC support) directly to their wrist. They can also use the Galaxy Watch to talk to guests remotely.

In addition, Galaxy Watch users can now start/stop the ringing and control the ringing volume of the SmartTag. They can also adjust the fan speed of the air purifier and set the temperature of the thermostat. Blinds can be turned on, off, paused and adjusted in height – all from their Galaxy Watch.

Last but not least, Galaxy Watch users can now control their connected Smart TV remotely via the newly added Device to Device (D2D) control feature. This works with Samsung Smart TVs that support BTHID and require the device to be in Bluetooth range.

The latest SmartThings update is available for the Galaxy Watch family of watches running WearOS, namely Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

A smart home standard designed to take the concept of interoperability of IoT devices to new heights has recently been released. Samsung has now announced a partnership with Amazon that will allow SmartThings and Alexa users to use Matter’s multi-administrator capabilities and expand cross-device communication and functionality.

The partnership aims to simplify the setup process for Matter devices through SmartThings and Alexa. Samsung said the partnership builds on the Commissionable Endpoints API and the upcoming Alexa API, which enable multi-admin settings and threaded credential sharing for Matter.

SmartThings customers have long enjoyed using Alexa voice capabilities to give them more ways to control their homes,” said Samsung SmartThings head and corporate vice president. We are excited to partner with Amazon to help simplify the smart home experience and provide mutual customers with more choices about the types of devices and services they use in their homes.”

Essentially, as far as the end user is concerned, this partnership will allow opt-in customers to use SmartThings and Alexa to control Matter hardware without having to set up smart home devices on each platform. Previously Samsung SmartThings and Google Home have been integrated, this time involving Amazon and Alexa.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance and its members, including Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and other smart home manufacturers, announced the launch of the Matter 1.0 smart home accessory standard.

The premiere version of Matter supports a variety of common smart home product categories, including lighting and electrical, HVAC controls, window shades, safety and security sensors, door locks, video players, inter-protocol bridges, and consoles that can be embedded in many different kinds of products.
