Samsung’s Odyssey line of high-end gaming monitors is widely regarded as one of the best in the industry, and Samsung aims to take its next-generation monitor lineup to the next level at CES 2023.

Today, Samsung announced that it will unveil two new gaming monitors during the CES 2023 event as part of its Odyssey lineup: the Odyssey Neo G9 and the Odyssey OLED G9. In addition, the company shared details about the new ViewFinity S9 and the latest smart monitor, the M8.

Odyssey Neo G9
The new Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is the world’s first dual UHD resolution (7680 x 2160, “dual 4K”) monitor with a 32:9 aspect ratio. the monitor has a massive 1000R curved 57-inch panel with quantum mini LED technology and features VESA Display HDR 1000 certification for superior image reproduction even in the most challenging gaming environments.

The new Samsung Odyssey Neo G9’s display has a matte coating to reduce glare and also supports a peak refresh rate of 240Hz. And the Odyssey Neo G9 is the world’s first DisplayPort 2.1-enabled display, capable of transferring data at approximately twice the speed of DisplayPort 1.4 and delivering information without distortion with lossless industry-standard display stream compression (DSC).

With so many significant upgrades, the new Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 won’t be cheap, and Samsung hasn’t confirmed pricing or launch details.

Odyssey OLED G9
As the name implies, the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 is an updated version of the original G9, switching to a sharp OLED panel with deep blacks and near-infinite color contrast. Featuring a curved 1800R 49-inch panel with a quad-HD resolution and a 32:9 aspect ratio, the monitor uses Quantum Dot Technology OLED for pixel-perfect color contrast.

Samsung says the OLED display on the Odyssey OLED G9 illuminates each pixel separately and does not rely on a backlight, enabling a dynamic contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 while delivering true RGB and true black without the need for a color filter. Despite the OLED panel, the display boasts a 0.1ms response time for smooth gameplay and a 240Hz refresh rate.

In addition, the Odyssey OLED G9 provides access to various OTT platforms such as Prime Video, Netflix and YouTube via the Smart Hub, and also features Samsung’s Gaming Hub, enabling gamers to access cloud gaming platforms such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now. As with the new Odyssey Neo G9, Samsung has yet to share complete details about the Odyssey OLED G9.

ViewFinity S9
Samsung’s display lineup at CES 2023 isn’t all about gaming. The company also has something new for creators in the form of the new ViewFinity S9, a 27-inch 5K resolution display that covers 99 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut with an average Delta E of ≦2 for accurate color reproduction.

The ViewFinity S9 also comes with a built-in color calibration engine to ensure accurate screen color and brightness, allowing professionals to adjust white balance, gamma and RGB color balance for perfect accuracy via smartphone using the Samsung Smart Calibration app.

The monitor also features USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 ports to help professionals connect cameras and other devices to the monitor to quickly transfer high-resolution video or other files to their PCs. it also features a 4K SlimFit camera and supports local video conferencing via Google Meet and other apps included in the Samsung Smart Hub.

In addition to these three displays, Samsung will also introduce a new 27-inch version of the Smart Display M8 at CES 2023, with the 27-inch model featuring an upgraded 2K SlimFit camera, which is not available on the 32-inch model.

The first batch of 8K ultrawide monitors is finally coming, and it will be launched next year. The news was announced at the launch of AMD’s next-generation RX 7000 GPU, where the company announced that the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 will be the first ultrawide monitor to support this high resolution.

The first of these monitors will come from Samsung under the model Odyssey Neo G9, but AMD confirmed that companies like Dell, Asus, Acer, and LG will also support this higher resolution on future monitors, but not yet The specifics of these displays.

The exact resolution of these future displays is not known yet, but AMD lists 7680 x 2160 as a test resolution for “8K widescreen.”

AMD didn’t confirm that these first 8K monitors will support higher refresh rates (above 60Hz), but did hint at the ability to hit 165Hz now. That’s thanks to DisplayPort 2.1, which AMD supports on its new RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT. Compared to DisplayPort 1.4, DisplayPort 2.1 also boosts 1440p monitors from a maximum refresh rate of 480Hz to 900Hz, and 4K from 240Hz to 480Hz.

The reason why AMD is making a big fuss about this is that Nvidia’s RTX 40 series graphics cards do not support DisplayPort 2.1, and even the flagship RTX 4090 is still stuck on DisplayPort 1.4a. However, for 8K ultrawide, DisplayPort 1.4a can still support a 135Hz refresh rate, but the standard 8K resolution is locked at 60Hz.

As exciting as 8K sounds, most PC gamers are still using 1080p displays, even though there has been some noticeable growth in 1440p and 4K gaming over the past few years. AMD, however, provided some performance charts on how its RX 7900 XTX performs in 8K, hoping to demonstrate why the age of 8K gaming is finally here.

In 8K ultrawide mode, the RX 7900 XTX is said to be able to hit 190 fps in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and 148 fps in Death Stranding’s Director’s Cut. Meanwhile, it hits 96fps in standard 8K in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and 73fps in Uncharted: Rogue Legacy Collection, all performance tested at max settings, but FSR is turned on in performance mode, hence getting such a high frame rate.

AMD says more details on these displays will be given in 2023.
