Samsung has submitted what appears to be their next generation 990 Pro 1 TB and 2 TB PCIe Gen 5.0 SSD certification application to the Korean regulator RRA. Unlike other manufacturers that rely heavily on Phison, Kioxia and Silicon Motion PCIe Gen 5.0 controllers, Samsung will be developing their own proprietary solid state solution.

The Korean RRA (National Radio Research Agency) has listed upcoming SSD drives that Samsung has submitted with model names including “MZ-V9P1T0” and “MZ-V9P2T0”. For reference, the existing Samsung 980 Pro PCIe Gen 4.0 SSD is labeled “MZ-V8P1T00” and these are likely Samsung’s next generation 990 Pro 1TB and 2TB PCIe Gen 5 SSD models.

It should be noted that Samsung has already launched its first PCIe Gen 5.0 SSD for servers with the PM1743 model, which offers speeds of up to 13GB/s (random reads) and 2,500K (IOPS). The drive has a capacity of 15.36TB, but one should not expect such a ridiculous capacity for a consumer platform. We know that the next generation of PCIe Gen 5.0 SSDs will offer speeds of up to 14GB/s and capacities of up to 8TB, so that’s what we should expect from Samsung storage solutions.

It remains to be seen if suppliers develop some new cooling solutions for NAND and DRAM chips since upcoming products are expected to operate at higher temperatures. Samsung has already made a custom 980 PRO SSD for the PS5 with a heavy-duty industrial heatsink, so something similar could be coming to the next-generation 990 PRO SSD as well.

Samsung could announce its next-generation 990 Pro 1 TB and 2 TB PCIe Gen 5.0 SSD solutions at CES late this year or in 2022.
