Samsung Electronics has hired two former Ericsson executives, according to Business Korea. Samsung is taking this step to expand its telecom equipment business by incorporating the experience of two former Ericsson executives.

Henrik Jansson, former Ericsson strategic sourcing manager, has been appointed to lead a strategic task force (TF) established under Samsung’s networking division. Jo Mi-Sun, another former Ericsson executive hired alongside Jansson, is responsible for sales and new business development in Europe. jo Mi-Sun was previously the head of sustainability and corporate responsibility at Ericsson.

Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-Yong has chosen telecom equipment as one of the company’s flagship businesses. This is not a new strategy, as Lee has been driving the network business since 3G became widely available in 2011, with the subsequent introduction of 4G services, Samsung Networks successfully supplied 5G mobile devices to NTT DoCoMo last November, thanks to Lee’s global network strategy.

Another example of Lee’s global strategy is Samsung’s successful contract with DISH Network in the U.S. for the supply of 5G communications equipment in 2022. Also in 2020, Lee Jae-yong met with Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg to discuss cooperation between the two giants, resulting in a large long-term 5G contract worth 7.9 trillion won (currently about 43.45 billion yuan, or about $6.43 billion).
