Samsung Electronics announced another addition to its 200-megapixel (200MP) series of sensors with the new image sensor ISOCELL HPX, which continues Samsung’s smallest 0.56-micron (μm) pixels. Images captured with the 200-megapixel ISOCELL HPX are able to maintain 12.5 megapixels (12.5 MP) of sharpness even when enlarged to four times the original image size.

Samsung 200 Million Pixel Image Sensor ISOCELL HPX

ISOCELL HPX’s DTI (Deep Trench Isolation) technology not only separates each pixel individually, but also increases sensitivity, and the 0.56-micron pixel size reduces the camera module area by 20%, resulting in a thinner and lighter smartphone body.

With Tetra2pixel technology, the Samsung ISOCELL HPX can automatically switch between three light-gathering modes depending on the light conditions: 200 million pixels when the pixel size is kept at 0.56 microns (μm) in a well-lit environment; 50 million pixels when the pixel size is converted to 1.12 microns (μm) in a low-light environment; and 2.24 million pixels when the pixel size is kept at 0.56 microns (μm) in a low-light environment. 16 pixels in one gives a 2.24-micron (μm) 12.5-megapixel sensor. This technology allows the ISOCELL HPX to provide a good shooting experience even in low-light conditions.

In addition, the Super QPD autofocus solution allows the ISOCELL HPX to be equipped with fast autofocus, a technology that uses a micro-lens over four adjacent pixels and a sensor that detects phase differences horizontally and vertically to achieve fast focus.

The ISOCELL HPX enables users to shoot 8K video at 30fps and supports seamless dual HDR (High Dynamic Range) in 4K and FHD (Full HD) modes.

Smart ISO Pro technology gives the ISOCELL HPX a high dynamic range and the ability to capture rich color combinations. Single-frame progressive HDR (Staggered HDR) with the addition of Smart ISO Pro technology captures shadows and bright lights in a scene at three different exposures: low, medium, and high, depending on the shooting environment. The three exposures are combined to present high-quality HDR pictures and videos. In addition, it enables the sensor to render images in over 4 trillion colors (14-bit color depth), which is 64 times more than Samsung’s predecessor, 68 billion colors (12-bit color depth).
